Isolatd in their struggle and condemned by world opinion, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam (LTTE) nonetheless proved capable of withstanding all external forces for a period of decades, drawing large numbers of Tamils, both inside Sri Lanka and outside in the Tamil Diaspora, to support tits cause. The LTTE created a progressive internal movement that succeeded in breaking down ancient caste barriers that had resisted the political inducements and leadership of figures such as Gandhi, and inculcated a climate of social justice and equality. This book describes what life was like on the ground inside Tamil- controlled territory where the forces of war were held at bay—what the author has referred to in the title of this book as "The Fleeting Moment...". What followed was a process of the destruction of everything that she described when it was overrun by the Sri Lankan army and the Tamil genocide began.

About the Author
N. Malathy is member of the Sri Lankan Tamil Diaspora and a naturalised New Zealand citizen who has lived in New Zealand for four decades. She holds a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, where she has worked as an analyst and programmer. She has written extensively on the human rights situation in Sri Lanka and also translated a short novel set in the Vanni context which has been accepted for publication by Penguin India. She spent four years in Sri Lanka, in the Vanni District under the control of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam (LTTE), from 2005 till 2009, a period marked by the gradual weakening of the 2002 Norwegian brokered ceasefire, which eventually led to the brutal war in which LTTE was defeated and its leadership killed or imprisoned. During this period she worked in many institutions, including a human rights body, a women’s organization, and an orphanage. Her experiences spanned working with LTTE to release child soldiers, preparing documentation for peace talks for the same body, documenting human rights violations by the Sri Lankan military and working on a project to raise awareness of domestic violence.

An Intellectually Honest Analysis and Factual Account

My rehabilitation work in teaching and developing the Vanni Institute of Technology (VanniTech) in Kilinochchi during the 2002 - 2006 time frame of the Ceasefire Agreement more or less overlapped Dr. Malathy's work at the Peace Secretariat. I can say with absolutely no equivocation, that of all the numerous accounts and analyses I have read, Dr. Malathys' is the most accurate and faithful representation of the life and times that I experienced in the Vanni during that period. Her depiction of the civilian administration and her lucid exposition of the many facets of the life of the people of the Vanni is exactly what I experienced in my teaching, working, and living among these people. Those 5 years of my life spent among the wonderful, hospitable, and indomitably courageous people of the Vanni was certainly "a fleeting moment in my country", but it was also the most exhilarating moment of my life when I could hold my head up high, second to none, in my mother country. Dr. Malathy's book will take you soaring to those heights, while planting your feet firmly on "terra firma" with her candid assessment of the realities on the ground.

Forgotten Genocide

Bring up the forgotten Tamil Genocide in Srilanka with facts. The world media is talking about Syria, Iraq, Afga... but why not the more brutal Tamil Genocide? Is it the western hypocrisy?

Genuine attempt to clear many wrong perseptions. Brilliant!

Malathy's presence in Vanni during the crucial period and her fair and narration is brilliant. I have been in Vanni many a times during her period and before, from the time of ceasefire.
The issues of Child Soldiers and that the accusation that the LTTE fired at the civilians trying to leave, have been simply mentioned without her giving opinion. I know that these two issues were planned even before the genocide by the perpetrators, to cheat the IC. This book is highly recommended.
