Smith leads the Servant Partners team in Manila, Philippines, where he serves as a founding leader of Botocan Bible Christian Fellowship. He also directs the Transformational Urban Leadership program at Asian Theological Seminary in Manila, and is the lead instructor in Servant Partners’ Global Urban Training School, Foundations. He earned a Masters of Divinity from Asian Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Ministry from Bakke Graduate University in Seattle, Washington. Aaron and his wife, Ema, and their sons, Zach and Ezra, continue to live and serve among the urban poor.

Highly recommended for urban ministry

When you've been living in the inner-city for almost 20 years, you know that how you live becomes as important as why you're there. Raising a family while doing ministry adds even more complexity to that equation. Aaron's book is a great tool for grappling with a long-term call to an urban poor context; it's of the most practical manuals I've read for figuring out specifics of how to live in the city in a way that really fits. There's a good challenge to all of us to not give up, but a lot of grace for the challenges of individual situations as well.

So helpful for anyone working w/the disenfranchised!

This is a great read for anyone living alongside the disenfranchised. I intentionally live in a working-class US neighborhood, not a global urban 'slum', but this book was still so helpful in challenging me to become a neighbor (it "means so much more than just moving in", as he said) and to establish healthy patterns around my outreach. I especially liked the 'Pause and Reflect' questions in Part II, which is all about applications to your own context. Truly helpful.

With a writing style as simple as the community he serves, Aaron Smith paints a vivid yet practical portrait of "incarnational ministry" among the urban poor. While it is intended as an evaluation and planning tool for Christian workers contemplating such a commitment themselves, the book subtly challenges those of us who might be termed “drive-by” missionaries to rethink the notion of “incarnational” living even in our own middle class American neighborhoods.
