This book changed me

I discovered this method of personality diagnosis from a co-worker. He left the first edition of this book on my desk at work. He told me I was a certain personality type, which I did not believe since I felt that all people are a mix of all kinds of personal history, religious beliefs, etc. When I read about the type he had described as me, I was astounded. It was as if someone had written down my thoughts. Till that time I had been a fairly depressed person with no reason to believe my life would improve. I focused on the positive attributes of my personality type to realize a new awareness about myself. This book truly helped me evolve.

Personality Types in a Poetic System

This is a great book that highlights the 27 personality types of the Enneagram personality system. Each type is given a thorough description, including trouble spots for people of each type and what happens when that person becomes psychologically unhealthy or becomes more healthy, up to their peak. I bought the book to find myself, of course, and I did that, but I like to read it from time to time to check out other people's types and see if I can figure out which type applies to which friend.

To me the best part of all this is the poetry of the authors. They don't just churn out boring text about different personalities; they really gave some thought to how each type acts when they are psychologically healthy and how they act when they are unhealthy, or just average. When you find yourself, it feels like being discovered by a talent scout from Hollywood; the descriptions are flattering and so well said that you'll love finding you.

This is a big book, over 500 pages, and it is stuffed with information. You can pick it up for a few bucks on Amazon used books and enjoy it for months as you chew through the types and assign your friends and family their character. Highly recommended; everybody should own a copy of this book.

A Must-Read

I've read this book too many times to count.
It is one of the most important books you could ever read.
It helped me so much with myself and other people, and I could not have raised my 8w7 child without it. (General child-rearing classes and books not only do not give good advice for raising an 8w7, a lot of their recommendations actually make things much worse. Ask me how I know.... ;)
As per the authors' recommendation, I read Enneagram writings by others, but no one else came close to Riso and Hudson in terms of understanding and objectivity.
Wish I could give 10 stars.

Nice book for Matlab Graphics

I was able to purchase a pdf file directly from the publisher. I spent some time going over the graphics commands in the book to create my own personal quick reference. I am happy that I was able to get the information that suited my needs. If you are looking for a book that teaches you to work with the wealth of graphics commands in Matlab, then this is one of these books. The author does a good job in covering the diverse two and three dimensional graphics commands using short examples that hit the point. You need not read the entire book to benefit from the coverage of graphics commands. Instead you can zoom in the sections that present the commands for the graphs you intend to draw. The author also includes the family of ez-commands (like ezplot, ezsurf, and ezcontour to name a few) that help you to quick draw curves, surfaces, and contours using equations instead of vectors of data points. He also lists summaries of the commands by categories. I found that to be very helpful. You can invoke the commands directly from the history window or you can place the commands in Matlab scripts and functions. I recommend this book for new Matlab programmers and users that want to draw nice looking graphs that can enhance their reports and presentations.

Poor Tutorial for Tying Neck Scarves

Nice book IF you are looking for a variety of ways to wear a scarf on your head or as an item of clothing. It gave interesting facts on past fashion icons. However, if you are simply looking for a variety of ways to wear scarves of different sizes and shapes around your neck, this is not the book for you. There were very few examples. It would be a great gift for someone who has lost her hair.

A Fabulous Python Book

This is an excellent Python book that teaches the language through fascinating cryptographic algorithms. First about the organization of the book. Very pleasing typeset and nice font size. Code is written inside boxes. The layout and author's style make it an excellent read. The book is accompanies with the author's website where all programs are available for download, though author rightfully asks readers to type in the program themselves. There is even a 'diff' program that author provides in his website which compares readers's program to one on the book, thereby facilitating faster troubleshooting. The book has 24 chapters. Most chapters have a quote that is very relevant from security point of view.

The first chapter gets the reader introduced into cryptography. I asked my 10 yr old daughter to follow along on few chapters. She got fascinated by the hands on exercises in the first chapter (Author asks for the cipher wheel to be photocopied and cut to make paper ciphers). Kids will have great fun with coded messages while introducing to crypto concepts. Next few chapters gets a reader to install Python (version 3) in Windows, Linux or MAC. For a novice, the instructions and screenshots are sure to help. The shell, string functions, writing programs and executing them should become easy once reader goes through first 5 chapters. There are exercises in the book's website which are essential to master the concepts. All programming language constructs are tied together in the chapter 6 where Caesar cipher is implemented.

It is really interesting to learn Python through one domain area. The reader masters both Python and Crypto concepts. Author shows how Caesar cipher can be hacked easily and then explains and then implements a transposition cipher. Programs are only as good as it is implemented. There could be bugs introduced in the system. There is a chapter on writing a test program in Python. When needed math concepts are also introduced (chapter 14 - modular arithmetic; Chapter 23 - prime numbers). Other ciphers explained and implemented in Python in this book are Affine cipher, Substitution cipher, Vigenere cipher, and one time pad cipher. The last chapter takes the reader into public key cryptography and RSA Cipher.

This book is a delight to learn Python for all levels of people. I know few kids who want to write apps and start learning in a quick fashion with an aim of producing something. In the long run, without a fundamental strong background it will hurt. Python is an ideal first language these days (not BASIC anymore!) and this books perfectly fits the need. The author's writing style, systematic focus on examples and exercises makes it very easy to learn. As a byproduct to learning Python, you also learn cryptography which is a fascinating discipline. I also recommend Author's other Python books highly - Invent Your Own Computer Games with Python, 2nd Edition and Making Games with Python & Pygame.

Great book for learning python

I started reading this book being familiar with python but not with doing encryption via python. The lessons don't assume the reader knows anything about programming. A more experienced programmer might want to skip the first few 6 chapters as they deal with string manipulation basics and simple ciphers. The book lays a good foundation on how to encrypt text and decrypt text. I appreciated that it was a beginners book that covered an interesting subject beyond the usual array of 'Hello World' programs.

After reading a portion of the book I can truly say that this book is a must have book for any individual interested & looking to learn cryptography! This book is incredibly captivating for the average soul who has no prior knowledge in cryptography. Cryptography is a very interesting subject, and although you don't get into the crazy stuff yet in this book, the knowledge you learn from this book is amazing and a necessity for future books. Here are a few benefits reading this book.

- I was always slightly confused with Cryptography. This book is GREAT for beginners. I am never too confused like I usually am.
- After reading a big portion of the book, I am excited for what's coming next in the book! This book is captivating and is a fun journey going through it.
- I love the subtle humor, which makes the book that much more enjoyable.

If you want to get into hacking, you won't become a l33t hacker from this book, but reading this book WILL introduce you to it. I can't think of any other book that will help you learn so much and keep you interested as much as this book. I always loved the idea of cryptography and this book really helped me grow in terms of crystallographic knowledge.

Plot improbabilities, such as the stunning ineptitude of the FBI, and undifferentiated characters hamper what could have been a compelling mystery. Completely unexpected ending!!!

I read some great reviews of Shadowlands before I decided to go ahead and read it. I mean, I was unconvinced that it would be as good as some people were saying it was. Nevertheless, I had already gotten the book, so I figured I might as well read it. I'm still trying to decide whether I loved it or not. I guess I did, but the ending kind of killed that love.

I'm begin with what I liked and/or loved about Shadowlands. Pretty much everything. I loved the characters, the setting, the plot, it was all great. I'll elaborate. Shadowlands grabbed my attention right from the start. It dived right into the action and I loved that. Kate Brian did a great job with the pacing of the story and with character development, which I thought was pretty good.

I liked just about all the characters. However, my favorite had to be Steven Nell, the serial killer. He was a fantastic character. I think he was so well written that I felt like he could actually be a real life serial killer and I found myself connecting with him much more than I did with Rory. I wanted to know more about him and know more about his side of the story, so I wish there was more on that.

As I previously said, Shadowlands moved at a great pace and I loved everything that was going on. It was definitely suspenseful and while there wasn't a ton of action, it kept me on my toes. I was pretty much terrified. I loved this book so, so much... right up until the ending. What a disappointment. I just didn't see that coming and that's what upset me. Some reviewers said that they expected it, I just didn't see any of the clues that led up to it and I felt like it just ended on a huge cliffhanger. I'm actually really eager to read the sequel in this series, because I just want to know what's going on and how I just didn't see that coming!

Overall, Shadowlands was a great book with a great plot and amazing characters. Even though I loved just about everything, the ending left me feeling disheartened with the book. I'm hoping the next book in the series will fix that!

Thoroughly bone-chilling!

Shadowlands is like a jigsaw puzzle - even though you try very hard to figure it out, you don't get to see the whole picture until the very end. And the pieces of this particular puzzle snap together even more tightly when you read the book the second time. Reading it is a phenomenal - I'd even go as far as to say diabolical - experience. It grips you from the opening lines and the ever-increasing tension never lets up. In the end, you're left completely breathless, confused as hell and eager to start from the beginning to try and figure out what in the world have you just read.

The story centres around Rory Miller, a teenage girl who somehow miraculously survived an attack from a serial killer. The killer - who also happens to be her teacher - have been watching her for months, obsessing over everything she did and said. And now he's determined to finish what he started.

After her brush with death, Rory and her family are sent away to a Juniper Landing (a small vacation town on a remote island) as part of a witness protection program. But what was supposed to be a fresh start quickly turns into yet another nightmare. The town is creepy. Weird and unexplainable things are happening, people act very suspiciously and it all adds up to a very disturbing and deeply bone-chilling picture. Things get even more intense when a local girl disappears without a trace and Rory catches glimpses of someone following her, someone who looks exactly like her former teacher.

Kate Brian evokes Rory's paralysing fear, pain and disorientation quite brilliantly. I couldn't help but to feel thoroughly creeped out - I swear I had goosebumps on my arms half of the time (must be some sort of a record!). The first person narrative only enhances the dream-like, foggy quality of this book, as the heroine herself doesn't have a clue what is happening, what's real and what's just her imagination playing tricks on her, causing her to see the person who almost ended her life around every corner. Is she losing her mind? Is she growing more and more paranoid? Is it shock? Fear? Or is something really happening? Is she in real danger here? Well, you can wreck your brain as much as you want, you'll never actually be able to guess what the big twist is! I was completely blown away reading the final pages of this novel. Not only did I not see it coming, I felt like someone just dropped a bucket of ice-cold water on my head. Multiple times.

I really connected with Rory, though I can't say that about any other characters in this book. I simply did not care for anyone else except the lead heroine. She stole the spotlight, her feelings and thoughts were completely absorbing. One thing for sure, I strongly disliked Rory's sister, Darcy. I couldn't stomach her whiny, annoying character. I hated how she always wanted to be the centre of attention, how she made everything about her, as if she was the only one affected by the situation. She was difficult, self-absorbed and downright unlikeable. As the story progresses, we learn more about her and some of the reasons behind her behaviour and attitude, but for me that just wasn't enough to redeem her in my eyes. One thing I really loved, though? The occasional glimpses into the twisted mind of the serial killer. They were incredibly well-written, thoroughly blood-chilling and shocking.

Overall this story is a total winner. Kate Brian's prose is nothing short of amazing - everything she describes feels too real, too convincing not to be totally freaked out. The author literally takes your hand and leads you straight into darkness, into world that is both intriguing and terrifying. Shadowlands is filled with sadness that wraps itself around you like a blanket and eventually breaks your heart into pieces. This mind-bender of a book is absolutely not to be missed.

Mindblowing!

I have avoided writing this review for a couple of days and I am finally going to review it. For me the most difficult reviews to write are for 5 Star books. I tremendously enjoyed Shadowlands and I doubt any review could do this book justice. There are no spoilers for Shadowlands.

From the first chapter of Shadowlands I was immediately hooked into this intriguing mystery. Kate Brian starts off Shadowlands with a bang. Our protagonist Rory is being attacked by serial killer Steven Nell but she manages to escape his clutches. Rory's family moves to a vacation town called Juniper Landing. Juniper Landing seems like such a wonderful and relaxing place until one of Rory's new friends goes missing. Could Steve Nell be the cause of this disappearance?

This is my first time reading a book by Kate Brian and this definitely won't be the last time I read a book of hers. Shadowlands was extremely addicting to read and I couldn't bear to stop reading even for short periods of time. One of my favorite components of Shadowlands are the short chapters from Nell's point of view. It was seriously chilling to read about an attempted murder from a serial killer's point view. Juniper Landing was a terrific setting and Brian did a wonderful job with making a vacation town seem so strange and dark. Who ever thought a vacation place could be so grim and ghastly?

So many reviewers have stated that they found Shadowlands very predictable but I completely disagree. From the start of Shadowlands I had a bunch of predictions but they all turned out to be wrong. Just when I thought the book was going in a certain direction, Kate Brian threw in a gut wrenching plot twist. The ending of Shadowlands was just mindblowing and I honestly never saw it coming.

Once or twice I felt like some of the characters lacked a bit of common sense. It's kind of common sense to me that if a serial killer is looking for you, you shouldn't walk around alone. I understand that Darcy doesn't want Steven Nell to ruin her social life but what's more important your social life or avoiding a serial killer?I am not sure if the characters were acting a bit ridiculous or if I was just over thinking everything like I always do.

Shadowlands is more than just your average thriller. Kate Brian daftly created a mind blowing tale that exceeded all of my expectations. Shadowlands ended on such an interesting note and I'm really curious to see how Brian follows up with the sequel.

It has great pictures and the supplemental items associated with the book would make teaching the class easy and fun. I really liked the way that the book was written and laid out and found all of the activities, questions, review questions, chapter summaries, etc., to be very beneficial and I know that they are things I would use."

About the Author
Ann Gordon has been in the early childhood field for over 45 years as a teacher of young children, of parents, and of college students. She has taught in lab schools, church-related centers, and private and public preschool and kindergarten programs. While at Stanford, Ann was at the Bing Nursery School for 11 years and was a lecturer in the Psychology Department. For 10 years she also served as an adjunct faculty member in four colleges, teaching the full gamut of early childhood courses. Ann served as executive director of the National Association of Episcopal Schools for 14 years, where more than 1,100 early childhood programs were a part of her network. She is now consulting in the areas of early childhood curriculum governance and professional development.

Kathryn Williams Browne has been a teacher most of her adult life: a teacher of young children for nearly 20 years, a guide for parents of the families she served, and, more recently, a parent educator and an instructor of college students for more than 15 years. Her work with children includes nursery school, parent cooperatives, full-day child care, prekindergarten and bilingual preschools, and kindergarten and first grade. Kate's background in child development research led her to choose early childhood education. While a Head Teacher at Bing Nursery School and a lecturer with Stanford University, Kate developed a professional relationship with Ann Gordon that blossomed into work in teacher and parent education. Moreover, her role as a parent has influenced BEGINNINGS AND BEYOND: her two children were born during the first two editions, so the book grew along with them. Recent work as a consultant and public elementary school board trustee has offered Kate new perspectives on schools, reform, and collaboration. Working closely with her students while teaching in two community colleges over the last decade, she has gained constructive insights that inform this text in every revision.

Love this book!

I used this book in my very first college class for child development and I couldn't wait to have a copy of my own. I went on line searched for it on Amazon found it, ordered it and it was like brand new, I was so happy! I will be using this book regularly for good practices in my profession. I would tell anyone to order books through Amazon and it's seller they do a great job of getting the books to you in a timely manner and they are always in great condition. I'm a happy customer and will continue to order books.

Writing style is very confusing

I HATE this book. Here is an exact copy of a sentence from it: "It is called maturation because it sets out a sequence of cognitive (thinking) stages that is governed by heredity--how the body is structured biologically, with automatic (instinctive) behaviors such as an infant sucking at birth." I don't know if it's just me, but this book is soooo painful to read because the author slams WAY too much info into every sentence. The whole (thinking), --how the body is structured, (instinctive), such as an infant sucking at birth.....it's useless info, it distracts me from the main point. The author does this A LOT. Anytime a "big word" is used there's an explanation in parenthesis or an example after it. There's also a lot of sentences that just go on and on and on and I'm finding myself having to break it down to try to understand the main idea. For some people I guess it may be helpful to have the explanations like that but to me it's just confusing!!! I know what cognitive means, I know what heredity is, I know what automatic means, I know an example of an automatic behavior. I do not need to have all of these explained to me in one sentence, it's too much to try to focus on and I have to go back and weed out the useless information to get the main idea out of the sentence. When you're assigned to read about 50 pages a night for your class, there's no way I'm going to sit there and sift through everything to see what's important and what isn't. So, if you can easily weed out or skim over the extra info this book may be better suited for you, but if you're like me and need things to be straightforward and to the point, be warned.

Wabi-sabi is a beauty of things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete.
It is a beauty of things modest and humble.
It is a beauty of things unconventional.

The immediate catalyst for this book was a widely publicized tea event in Japan. The Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi has long been associated with the tea ceremony, and this event promised to be a profound wabi-sabi experience. Hiroshi Teshigahara, the hereditary iemoto (grand master) of the Sogetsu school of flower arranging, had commissioned three of Japan's most famous and fashionable architects to design and build their conceptions of ceremonial tea-drinking environments. Teshigahara in addition would provide a fourth design. After a three-plus-hour train and bus ride from my office in Tokyo, I arrived at the event site, the grounds of an old imperial summer residence. To my dismay I found a celebration of gorgeousness, grandeur, and elegant play, but hardly a trace of wabi-sabi. One slick tea hut, ostensibly made of paper, looked and smelled like a big white plastic umbrella. Adjacent was a structure made of glass, steel, and wood that had all the intimacy of a highrise office building. The one tea house that approached the wabi-sabi qualities I had anticipated, upon closer inspection, was fussed up with gratuitous post- modern appendages. It suddenly dawned on me that wabi-sabi, once the preeminent high-culture Japanese aesthetic and the acknowledged centerpiece of tea, was becoming-had become?-an endangered species.

Admittedly, the beauty of wabi-sabi is not to everyone's liking. But I believe it is in everyone's interest to prevent wabi-sabi from disappearing altogether. Diversity of the cultural ecology is a desirable state of affairs, especially in opposition to the accelerating trend toward the uniform digitalization of all sensory experience, wherein an electronic "reader" stands between experience and observation, and all manifestation is encoded identically.

In Japan, however, unlike Europe and to a lesser extent America, precious little material culture has been saved. So in Japan, saving a universe of beauty from extinction means, at this late date, not merely preserving particul

Wabi sabi tells us to stop our preoccupation with success and enjoy the unencumbered life.

I love short books that are meaningful. This book I read in a couple hours and the message is so peaceful and life giving.

Wabi Sabi is a term that comes from two Japanese words mashed together and it is rarely defined, indeed it kind of avoids being defined. The author says Japanese people know the feeling but not the definition. This was indeed my experience in Tokyo as I asked my friend to guide me to things that connected with Wabi Sabi culture.

There are black and white photos on almost every other page of this book, of various things that convey the Wabi Sabi idea. The book spends a few pages on conveying the definition or more accurately, the feeling of Wabi Sabi, it gives a bit of history, then outlines the "Wabi Sabi Universe" which includes the following headings:

Metaphysical Basis
Spiritual Values
State of mind
Moral Precepts
Material Qualities

Wabi Sabi is the opposite of the Rat Race. It reminds me of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount or the struggle against nature. It values simplicity and perhaps above all the process of nature. Thoreau and Emerson would approve.

Please Buy This If You're A Perfectionist.

A solid reminder that exactly what you're trying to create--in whatever manner--will not be complete until something about that process or result is imperfect. And that the true beauty is not only in that imperfection, but your acceptance of it.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who, like me, is a rigid Type A with difficulty acknowledging (let alone accepting!) that the standard Earth day is 24 hours instead of 62 and sometimes failures are our greatest successes. While not directly instructing you on the specific creation of imperfections within your own work, this book will make you uncomfortable in the most gently reassuring way while you look for the reasons for those flaws and examine the moments of personal growth they allow you and whoever may view or experience what you make secondhand.

I am crazy about this book. Or maybe I'm just crazy but this is a wonderful book – small but potent and an essential purchase.

As the title says, this is a book for artists poets philosophers and designers. The very beginning made me double over in laughter, but what follows is as profound as it is silly. A celebration of the imperfect, the incomplete and the unworthy. It is said that God does not love us for our perfections but for our occlusions. Reading this book I would say that those who practice Wabi Sabi know exactly what that means.And at first I thought the book would be about that green mustard they serve with sushi. It's much more profound than that, and was just what I needed to hit the spot.
