"I hate you/I love you" romance.

A Marriage Has Been Arranged is an enjoyable romance that dates itself by some of the jargon and references, but is still a good "I hate you/I love you" story to curl up with for a couple of hours.
Holly Nicholson, 24, is a garden designer who loves her career and is making a name for herself. She is smart and strong and is no doormat. While attending a workshop on flower arranging, she is surprised to see her step-sister's ex-lover there acting as an interpreter for an older Japanese woman. Holly fell in love with him at age 19, when he came to a dinner party. Even then, Pierce Sutherland, 35, was handsome and rich. Holly is dismayed to learn that she not only finds him attractive but she still loves him. The elderly Mrs. Shintaro graciously offers Holly a ride home in the limo, and Holly uses the time to inform Pierce (and Mrs. Shintaro) of her opinion about him: he used her sister for sex, then dumped her, giving her sister a taste for the good life that caused her to go from one rich man to another in the years since. Furthermore, she declares that she hates him and always will.
Pierce denies using the sister, but does not deny that he has had a succession of lovers. Taking the time to see Holly and take her out (yes, she goes with him despite her declaring she hates him,) he says he has changed is no longer the hard charging business man out to accumulate as much wealth as possible, but now runs a foundation that aims to fight mismanagement of aid to the poor in third world countries. And, he is ready to settle down...with Holly.
The characters are well fleshed out and come to life. The dialog is good, too, and sounds natural. I thought there was too much discussion about women's roles in the home vs the workplace, and such, which did not add to the romance. The hero and heroine interact like you would expect them to, so there's no sudden, odd turn that leaves the reader confused. Pierce is a very likable hero and is thoughtful and kind, and I think most readers can identify with the heroine. Holly quickly sees how she is mistaken about her sister (Pierce was not the sister's first sugar daddy) so the reader isn't subjected to the shrewish 'I hate you' rhetoric for very long.
The plot is pretty straightforward and there's really no misunderstandings, other than Holly worrying over the fact that she loves him but he does not love her. Mainly, it is their getting to know one another and Holly seeing how Pierce has changed. With no real problem to overcome, the ending slides right into the honeymoon, which is a sweet couple of chapters. However, this book includes a description of what must be the gaudiest bed ever to grace the pages of a romance book!
I always thought that Harlequin Romances, the old ones, at least, were 'clean' and without sex in the story, however as I work my way through a large box of old HRs, I am finding this is certainly not true of many authors. In this one, sex is front and center as a topic of conversation. Pierce has had a string of kept women, and Holly is no virginal heroine. Still, she worries that she will not be skillful in bed enough to satisfy him, and is ready to get on with the lessons before the wedding. Thankfully, Pierce insists they wait.
