Brilliant, though tedious.

Not that there are a lot of alternatives, but this is really the best book on the topic and the update was long overdue. It is tedious to read, but incredibly rich in detail and brilliantly organized. It is very comprehensive. It is a textbook/reference, so one should not expect it to be easy reading. I would rank this close to the top among the hundreds and hundreds of textbooks/references I have read or used in my 20 years. I rarely give 5 stars to a book, but this really is brilliant.

Well-written and thorough, but appendix and problem sets need work

This book is a clear and thorough read. It contains many great case examples, and I didn't find myself confused at any part reading through it. That being said, the appendix is atrocious. You're better off just perusing the chapter that may contain a particular concept than checking the appendix. The problem sets are a bit confusing and unclear. It can be difficult to know what the authors are asking, and the methods to calculate the answers are often not explicit.

This is a very informative text that is applicable to a variety of fields. The authors do an excellent job of bringing together data from a myriad of sources to build a compelling case for fundamental linkages between the biosphere and abiotic processes on the planet.

First published in 1974 as A Circle of Children this is the first of four books from learning disabilities specialist Mary MacCracken.

This is a book about children so emotionally disturbed they cannot fit into society; it is also the story of a woman whose involvement with these children changed the shape of their lives forever.

When Mary MacCracken joined a school for emotionally disturbed children as a volunteer, she quickly found herself rocked to the core by the strong, loving people who taught there, the hard-pressed and bewildered parents, and the damaged children. On the outside most of the children looked healthy. But the reality was far sadder. Locked away from love and any human contact, these children struggled with life every day.

It soon became evident that Mary MacCracken was a natural, gifted teacher. Over time, Mary taught her class to eat and to drink; she decoded their mutterings, and taught them to talk and to read. But most important of all she helped them to take the first steps towards feeling love and trust.

A Book You'll Never Forget

I read this book in high school over 10 years ago, and I still feel that it is the best book to really teach you what autistic and behaviorally disturbed children are really like. This is the book that made me choose to become a teacher. I recently recommended it to a friend who just married a man with a 7 year-old autistic daughter.

inspired me to be a teaacher

Books by Mary MacCracken and Torey Haden inspired me to become a teacher of students with disabilities. I loved their toughness and tenacity, and vicariously celebrated their moments of reaching the children and helping them learn and grow. I read these books again and again, and enjoyed them more each time. They helped me when I became discouraged when going through school and when I had my own classroom. They inspired me to keep trying and to build on small successes until they became big steps of progress for my students. I have had several wonderful mentors in my life I've known personally, but these two women were my first mentors in teaching through books. You'll be uplifted by them, too.

Highly recommended book!

Ever taught a kid that flaps his arms, talks gibberish, and has never eaten anything but saltines and chocolate milk his whole life? Mary has taught this kid, and many others with other abnormal conditions. This book is based on a true story about the life of Mary McCracken. Mary starts out as part of a League that went to visit a school for the emotionally disturbed. After an hour of visiting, Mary really wanted to work there. She started out as a volunteer under the supervision of a teacher named Helga. Mary moved up from being a volunteer to substituting for another teacher and eventually running her own class. Mary and another teacher Dan formed team teaching, which they took both classes into one big room and taught together. Each week they took kids to nearby attractions because these kids rarely get out. Mary and Dan were able to teach their students, such as, Brian to eat normal food, Jenny to talk, all the kids how to swim and working other miracles. The book ends with all the kids returning from winter vacation and Mary receiving a message that Dan would be stuck in Florida for awhile. A substitute, named Claude, is hired to teach in Dan's place.

I really enjoyed this book from the beginning up towards the very end of the book. When all the Junior Leaguers went to the school to visit, they ended up leaving quickly because they were disgusted in the school. Mary could have left too but she said she really wanted to stay. Her friend Ellen thought she was nuts but Mary didn't care what anyone thought. This is what I really admire about Mary. Another thing I admire about Mary is how she got Helga to become friends with her. Mary, who was hated by Helga because she was a volunteer, was able to gain respect from Helga when she quit her job at this school. I was amazed how she could teach these kids lessons that no other teacher seemed to do. Mary had many great ideas that contributed to her success. One great idea was the deciding each week where to take the kids. These emotionally disturbed kids don't get out much and this was the only way to do so. Also team teaching was another great idea because it enabled Mary and Dan to give two different points of view in learning. There were only two things I didn't enjoy about the book. The first thing was when Mary spent a few chapters discussing about her husband Larry. The book didn't get into details about why they needed a divorce or why Mary went on several vacations to be away from him. When reading these chapters I felt lost because they never said the cause of all this, just simply that it was happening. Lastly I think the book fell apart at the end, when Dan didn't return. I expected the book to end just like a school year would end. Or it would have ended with Dan and Mary still working miracles through their team teaching. Instead, Dan is missing, Mary is upset and she gets a substitute that is new to the whole school system. The book leaves you guessing as to, will Dan Return? And if he does, when will that be? Can the new substitute allow Mary to teach the way she usually did? How will the kids react when they find out Dan isn't around? Overall I was really addicted to this book.

This book has changed my opinions on how tough it is to be a teacher. It teaches you that goals can happen if you work hard enough and don't give up. Even some of the meanest teachers can be the ones that help you learn the most. I recommend this book to anyone who is considering teaching whether they are majoring in special education or not. If you love kids you would really enjoy this book. Even if you are a kid, you would enjoy this book because often you don't get to experience what it is like to be with the emotionally disturbed.

An essential challenge

I would recommend this book for anyone concerned about the problems of public, institutionalized education. It raises important challenges, the kind that are hidden in plain sight and often go unaddressed. As someone who survived K-Bacchelaureate with straight A's and psychological scars, only to learn too late that the words "Summa Cum Laude" on my degree were my reward in full, I find that many of Gatto's charges against institutional schools ring utterly true. Such schools teach their structure more than any content, and that that structure's facetious fragmentation of time and content, its pigeonholing of students by age, its usurpation of all personal privacy and dignity, and its very compulsory nature are actively hostile to the humanity and self-sufficiency we should want for students.

To me, however, Gatto's proposed solutions become problematic. His prescription is for true communities of a kind that perhaps no one I know---not even my parents and grandparents---can actually reconcile with the environment they grew up in. One friend in particular was disturbed by his proposed solutions because she was the child of a poor, single, and rather dysfunctional mother who was not well-equipped to facilitate her education without the availability of some kind of public school. Any solution to the school problem must address such situations, rather than simply trusting that all families and all communities will be functional and will meet children's needs if left to themselves.

Chapter 5, "The Congregational Principle," which focuses on proposed solutions, disturbs me most. Gatto vacillates from praising Socrates' condemnation of the Sophists for taking money to teach to espousing unleashing pure market forces on education. His exalted example is colonial New England towns that were able to achieve "true communities" through the option of excluding or oppressing undesirables. His point that these communities eventually corrected themselves from within without coercion (and the backlash it produces) is well taken, but as a liberal, I think it irresponsible to respond to the injustices of race, gender, and class by just leaving communities to their own prejudices and trusting that they'll be better a century after my death than they are now. Such triumphs of justice as Black Emancipation, Women's Suffrage, and the Civil Rights Act are, in my view, worth the fight, even if they did trump the judgement of some communities, and I don't follow Gatto's logic that immediately equates such nationwide achievements with nationally centralized school curricula that result in lifeless and mechanical schooling.

Perhaps my single biggest problem with this book is the lack of citations. I'm not prepared to take some of the author's scientific and historical assertions at face value---like a literacy rate of 98% in Massachusetts before compulsory schooling began, or the assertion that teaching the basic "three R's" takes only 100 hours with a motivated student---and feel that these need citations to investigate or confirm for myself.

Despite its problems, however, I would still call the book a "must read" for anyone with an interest in the issue. Gatto's criticisms of our schools' basic paradigm are ones we cannot afford to ignore, and although his proposed solutions may be flawed, we benefit from listening and weighing what he has to say.

In Dumbing Us Down, Mr. Gatto gives his first person perspective on the tragic waste of human potential induced by coerced 12-year confinement of the young to the artificial and anesthetizing environment of the classroom. The book is both enlightening and frightening. Personally, I felt a sense of vindication while reading the book. It put into words my negative feelings about education resulting from my unsuccessful 15 year struggle to encourage my own children to love learning. Mr. Gatto's writing has encouraged me to think that perhaps it was a GOOD thing that school was not able to press them into its mold! At the same time, I found it immensely disturbing that a brilliant, dedicated and award-winning teacher found it impossible to convince his own colleagues that grading, grouping, numbering and force-feeding irrelevant facts to captive children has no correlation to true learning, and does, in fact, suppress any natural curiosity they may have once had. I would like to recommend the book Deschooling Society by Ivan Illich for those interested in looking at the larger social implications of compulsory schooling. If I had it to do over?
