Well Done, But Left Me Feeling Ugly Inside...

This review has given me a lot of trouble. I've had a tremendous amount of difficulty putting my feelings about this book on paper because the feelings are so complicated. I really hated this book in so many ways. It left me feeling ugly inside, and I think I sat in my bed for about 20 minutes, hand over my mouth, in shock at how it all ended. This book does not contain an ounce of good feeling in it. Everything about it made me feel uncomfortable and really, really sad. The thing about that is that that was exactly how I was supposed to feel. This book is raw, and graphic. It gets right down to the nitty gritty of the effect bullying can have on a young person. Some people come out on the other side of it, others don't, but nobody comes away unscathed. The title is absolutely fitting, because it left me feeling just that, empty...

Dell's story is not unique. Young people face the kinds of abuse Dell faced in Empty every day, most of the time, silently, or worse, like Dell, with a mask of humor to hide their hurt. Nothing about Dell's, life was easy. Yes, much of it was of her own doing, but too much of it wasn't, and it was heartbreaking. I felt sick to my stomach much of the time I was reading this book because Dell didn't just FEEL like she had nobody looking out for her; She really didn't. She was alone in the world, and dealing with more hurt and ridicule than any one person should ever have to. Dell never even got her "moment" to show everyone her value as a human being. Even that was robbed from her. This book was so truthful and eye-opening, and REAL. I can't even. Sometimes there aren't happy endings. Sometimes people don't ever find joy in their lives. It is sad, but so heartbreakingly true. All this being said, I absolutely hated this book. Yes, it needed to be written, and yes, I think K.M. Walton did an absolutely stellar job writing it, but I can't get past how it made me feel. It cut me deeply, and I can't forgive it for that. If you like gripping, gritty, heart-wrenching reads (and I often do- Ellen Hopkins is a personal favorite), then you will probably want to read this, but I can't say that you will enjoy it. If I could go back in time, would I spend the time reading it again? Absolutely. But I still wouldn't like it.

Grade Level Recommendation This book is for high school age readers and up. It is graphic in many ways. There is a lot of language, sex, sexual assault, drinking, drug use, and other mature subjects. That said, I think this should be REQUIRED reading for HS students, just not before.

Loved it!

Just had to tell the author what i thought after i read this one, thought i'd share the email with you...

Hey K.M,

I've been meaning to email you since the weekend when I read Empty pretty much straight through!!!
Well I had to put it down just before the end because I was staying at a friend's place in QLD and was so engrossed that I was being quite unsociable! Then finished it the next arvo as soon as I got on the plane.
I really enjoyed it, I expected it to be good and insightful into the lives and struggles of teenagers because Cracked delivered that beforehand, but I was still pleasantly surprised by the depth of Dell's journey. I knew I'd want to read it but I didn't expect to be quite so involved and completely hooked. I was throughout.

During it I made my second mistake. I assumed the ending would be a feel good. I arrogantly decided that if it was aimed at a young adult audience it would do the usual and lead them by the hand to a happy place and leave them entertained but not necessarily challenged. All wrapped up neat as a bow. Silly me. I was watching the stack of pages I hadn't read get thinner and thinner and wondering how you were going to turn this all around in such a short space and then bam, it ended and I was hanging. Doh! I was so surprised, I was like What? Where's the rest? Then I started thinking about it and couldn't stop, imagining what could happen from there and what I wanted to happen, thought should happen if the world was fair and right. Wondered why it was so important to me and how it applied to those in my life.

Several days later I find myself still thinking about Dell and I just LOVE your ending!! I am so impressed (not that I should have been surprised) that you give the readers the credit for intelligence enough to draw their own conclusions and think with their own minds. It's brilliant! Not only do you NOT spoon feed them, you force them to consider themselves in the story and where and how they could have made a difference. You are not lecturing them or sugar coating, but so successfully making them responsible. For themselves and the lives around them. Genius.

I wanted to thank you for that. As anyone who's ever gotten lost in a book would say, it's a gift to become involved, and share in a story with not only the characters but also the author and you gave us that.
I certainly recommend this to everyone and I think this should be compulsory reading on every school curriculum.

I gave it 3 stars, but I really do recommend this contemporary.

Dell is fat and depressed. Her father abandoned her family leaving them practically destitute in exchange for a young, dumb, newer-model wife. Dell's best friend Cara is attempting to break into the popular crowd and that leaves Dell feeling abandoned and unloved. Dell's mother is addicted to pills and a bitch. The only positive thing in Dell's life is her baby sister, whom she loves dearly.

The first thing that struck me about Empty was Dell's character. Dell does not let us forget that she's overweight. In the beginning of the novel, it seemed like every other sentence Dell narrated involved her feeling fat. I understand what it's like to be fat and how overwhelming and depressed that can make you feel, but in Dell's case, it seemed so over the top. I wanted to have genuine feelings of sympathy for her, but she made that a little difficult in the beginning.

But in Dell's defense, her life does kind of suck. Her family is falling about and when her best friend Cara starts abandoning her, things go from bad to worse, especially when they attend a party together with the popular crowd. It was after that that I really began to have sympathy for Dell. I just wanted her to find some happiness... and maybe a psychologist. Dell's love for her sister also made her a much more likable character. They way she described how sweet her baby sister was, new baby smell at all, it was very touching. I would love to see a sequel to Empty which focuses on Dell's sister when she becomes a teenager. Give Empty a read and I think you'll agree that would be very interesting.

The ending. I'm not going to give it away even though I'm probably the only person in the world who will read this book and totally not see it coming. I did not see it coming at all. Dell completely surprised me and even though I felt little emotion about her from the beginning, I did have a good cry at the end of this novel. That surprised me... maybe I felt a little for Dell after all.

Three stars. Empty started out a little off to me, but got better as I kept reading. This book is far from horrible and for the most part I did enjoy it. If you're a fan of depressing contemporaries (I know you are, who didn't love TFIOS?) I recommend you give this one a read. It's a very fast, easy read that might just surprise you.

About the Author
Samuel Reshevsky was born in Ozorkow, Poland on November 26, 1911. Most chess players reach their peak at age 30. It was Reshevsky's misfortune that he reached his peak during the World War II years, when he was probably the strongest player in the world. He played in the World Championship tournament in 1948 and in the Candidates Tournament in Zurich 1953. In both events, there were rumors and reports of collusion by the Soviets to prevent Reshevsky from winning the world championship, which he probably would have won in a fair contest. Fischer is quoted as saying that Reshevsky was the strongest player in the world and would have easily defeated World Champion Botvinnik in a match. However, Reshevsky never got the chance. There is no doubt at all that Reshevsky was the strongest USA player in his time. He won the US championship seven times, in 1936, 1938, 1940, 1941, 1942, 1946 and 1969. He started his career as the greatest child prodigy in chess history, playing nearly master strength chess when he was eight years old. He went on a tour first of Europe and then America, giving simultaneous chess exhibitions against adults and winning almost every game. As a 9-year old, his first American simultaneous exhibition was with 20 officers and cadets at the Military Academy at West Point. The photo of him playing in this exhibition is one of the most famous in chess history. He won 19 games and drew one. He toured the country and played over 1,500 games as a 9-year old in simultaneous exhibitions and only lost 8 games. He started playing again as an adult and was quickly established as one of the strongest players in the world. Having started as the world's youngest master, Reshevsky went on to become the world's oldest. After winning a game against a strong player in the US Open and when somebody remarked that he was able to win at such an advanced age. He never had a birth certificate due to war-time conditions in his native Poland. Reshevsky remained a world class player even after he had passed 60 years old. He even won a game in Moscow against Smyslov in 1991 when Reshevsky was 80 years old. He defeated Grandmaster and US Chess Champion Larry Christiansen just a few months before he died. He died on April 4, 1992 in New York City at age 81.

Great insights into chess masters

The title is a little misleading: probably more accurate would be "Serious Mistakes in Grandmaster Play" ... or something along these lines. But Reshevsky probably did not want it to sound as if he were appealing to supermarket-tabloid taste. At any rate, some of the games are between grandmasters of about equal strength ... so regardless of who won, it was not an upset ... though perhaps the means were surprising.
The format of the book is that of seventeen chapters in which the worst mistakes in serious play of seventeen grandmasters are examined. These mistakes range from rather subtle ones ... which might simply have been an attempt to surprise, or "out-psyche," the opponent. Others are egregious blunders, and truly surprising. These are more in the nature of windows into the fragile nature of human mind than reflections on the player ... but are nevertheless interesting.
Reshevsky also provides an analysis of each player. Sometimes these are quite opinionated; or perhaps I should say quite strongly worded, though perhaps on the mark. One of the chapters covers the author himself. That chapter and the comments on the other players reveal quite a bit about Reshevsky.

There is no question that Reshevsky was a child prodigy who went on to become a top-notch grandmaster as an adult. The same is true of Capablanca. But one cannot escape a feeling that both players did not quite live up to their potential in the later part of their careers. (Capablanca by losing his crown so soon, as well as his declining performance in tournaments after that. Reshevsky by never becoming the official challenger for the world title, though he got close.) Is this coincidence? I am inclined to think not. I think both men realized that giving chess "their all" would hurt their personalities. I have a half-backed theory that overly concentrating on chess results in a "rewiring" of the brain which tends to distort the personality. I have Bobby Fischer in mind; but also Morphy, von Bardeleben, Nimzovich, and maybe even Alekhine.

Upsets??

After having been reading this book several times, I felt something wrong with the title. Then I read the column Evans On Chess in Chess Life, issue Jan/Feb 2001, I agreed with them. Many games in this books can hardly be the upsets. GM lost to GM; Champion vs Challenger's games can't be graded as such. Usually, a strong player losing to a much weaker player or the player with substantial advantage blowing the game (Reshevsky's own game, page 180) could be put in this catergory. Anyway there are many good games in this book; and the lesson here is even the champions can make mistake too.
Reshevsky, Korchnoy and Larsen are in the book; but Nimzowitch, Euwe, Geller, and Bronstein (one of my mentor) are NOT!!!
Another interesting point GM Larry Evans showed was the game between Euwe-Alekhine on pages 78 and 91 are identical but with some slightly different notes.

Looking for a hot, bad boy?

Something Firece starts with Tristan's room-mate and lover walking out on her. They haven't really been in a relationship more like roommates with benefits. Even though Tristan isn't really sorry to see him go it leaves her in a bind. She really needs another roomie to cover half the rent. In comes Kash. recommended by a friend he is new to town and needs somewhere to stay. While looking intimidating with a fighters body and guarded personality Kash and Tristan get on really well. Too well. Kash really isn't looking of a relationship and Tristain is leery about dating a roommate again.

Their relationship is complicated by the fact Kash isn't being open about his line of work. While not lying, he doesn't come clean to Tristan and in the end she finds out by accident. By this stage the physical attraction gets the better of them. I did have one moment when they are making out and Kash is still covered in an opponents blood that I found a little off-putting. But then things got steamy and I let it go. Even before they get out of bed Kash is regretting them being together. In his brutal Kash style he tells Tristan.

Kash doesn't want a relationship but you can see he really likes Tristan. His hot and cold act towards Tristan did dive me a little crazy. Thankfully it didn't last long. Kash is gritty and unapologetic about what he does. At the same time he is uneasy about Tristan knowing what he does and why. Tristian, Kash and their friends seemed a little young in some regards. Something Fierce almost had a bit of a new adult feel about the storyline. Saying that the content was defiantly all adult with a decent dose of sex and some violence. After all Kash is a cage fighter. I liked the Jenika Snows writing style she created believable, interesting characters and kept me reading to see if Kash and Tristan could work through their issues.

This is the first book in The Underground series by Janikia Snow. I have read all of the three books in the series. I must say I really liked this one and the third in the series Deeper . The second book I didn't connect with the charcters quite so much. Anyway start of with Something Fierce and see what you think!

First book in an amazing series

In this story we meet two people who are complete opposites of each other. You have Kash who is tattooed, pierced, and a cage fighter, then we has Tristan who is sweet, average, and lonely. It starts off as Tristan's roommate\lover moves out. Then a friends recommends Kash as a roommate replacement.

The relationship starts off good but as Kash isn't really opened with what he does, it does become kinda strained. I don't want to give anything away, but one thing that was a little off putting was has Kash acted. He was back and forth on how he treated Tristian.

Other than that this story is an amazing starts to a new series. I have already bought the other two book that come next and can't wait to read them! Enjoy!

Tristan just found out that her roommate is leaving without giving her any notice, so with her house payment due Tristan knows she needs to find a new room mate soon. When her friend tells her that her boyfriends long time friend is moving to town and looking for a place Tristan knows she has finally found her new room mate. Then Tristan meets him, Kash is frightening, he's huge, he has tattoos everywhere, and he's huge(yes I said that twice). But as Tristan gets to know Kash she see's there is more under the surface and that Kash is hiding behind his big wall.

There's an instant attraction both Tristan and Kash feel for one another but both try to fight it, till one night at a party a guy try's to hurt Tristan and Kash comes to her rescue. Now Kash and Tristan see that they are not only attracted to each other but that they care about the other, but Kash has had a hard life and he's hiding not only his past from Tristan but what he does for a living. When Tristan finds out she has to decide if the Kash she thought she knew is the real Kash or if this new Kash is the true Kash. As Tristan and Kash continue to grow closer Kash's beliefs about himself threaten to keep Tristan and Kash apart. It soon becomes clear that they will both have to decide if they should move on or risk it all for each other.

I loved this book Kash was hot, possessive, strong, powerful, fierce and protective. He was a great hero that was easy to love. I flew through this book because it was so good. I wish it was longer so we could have went deeper into Kash's past and more in depth into Kash and Tristan's future but even with that said this was a great book. Jenika Snow did a great job and is a fantastic author, I've never read her books before but I will be checking out her other books in the future. I love that this is a series with different main characters in each book, and we meet the hero and heroine for book two in this book. I also loved that this book in in both Kash and Tristan's point of view. This is one of those books that I overlooked for a while and then I found again, and I'm so lad I did.

Jared has offered numerous times to marry Paige. Numerous times Paige just said no.

Will either one of them break and get married or they both end up walking away? Paige said she would only marry for love and Jared doesn't know love. Read this book to find out what actually happens.

Can't stop reading

I picked this up as the continuation of the first section of the book. It's well-written, but there is a typo where the heroine's ex boyfriend becomes Keith instead of Kevin, which was distracting.

But the story plugs along, with a little more back story on the characters. Pretty good.

Worthless Slang

The reader should be warned that this book is a historical, religiously-sanctioned look at circumcision from a time when we knew MUCH LESS than we do now. In spite of the book's title, there are no "moral and physical reasons" for circumcision because the very notion contains flawed reasoning. ANY surgery that violates individual rights cannot be tolerated in the 21st century, no matter what the "reason". This is especially true when we consider the mutilation of the perfectly healthy genitalia of a newborn baby, regardless of sex.

Overall, this is a highly disturbing and incredibly biased book, and I question its publication as an ebook on Amazon's Kindle Store without a thorough disclaimer.

I do not recommend that anyone read this book, and would instead suggest: "Circumcision, The Hidden Trauma" by Ronald Goldman or "Marked in Your Flesh" by Leonard B. Glick.

Awful!!! This book, written during the latter part of the 19th Century, is full of old wives' tales and misinformation about circumcision.The author states that circumcision will cure everything from nervousness to constipation. Of historical interest only.

Wouldn't be without a Haynes manual for whatever vehicle I own.

Buy all brands of repair manuals for your vehicle, there may be a description in one or photo that clears up confusion in the other. Very useful if you do any of your own maintenance and minor, medium and even major repairs. Have bought Haynes manuals for every vehicle I've owned, but get the others too. They will end up supplementing each other equally! For VW be sure and get How To Keep Your Volkswagen Alive as well.

An Oldie byt a Goody

This book covers VW Bug repairs from the 60s to the 70s. If you own a VW Bug from that period you will find a great deal of relevant information on how to fix your Bug yourself. Complete with easy explanations and clear photographs showing you every step, this is a gem of a book for do-it-your selfers.
There are other books available, some excellent, some confusing and not very good. But the Haynes VW Repair Manual is one of the best. I would still recommend that you have this book on hand as well as one or two other VW Bug repair manuals. This way you can cope with every repair problem from every angle.

Not The Same

I borrowed a copy of this Haynes manual with the same Title, Haynes Book Number, and ISBN number. I liked it so I decided to buy a copy for myself. When I received this book, I found it was different because it did not contain most of exploded views as the borrowed copy and there were about 30 - 40 less pages. My guess is that Haynes wanted to reduce their publishing cost. The seller met all of my expections.
