Advice to War Presidents: A Remedial Course in Statecraft, by Angelo Codevilla

“War presidents” are hardly exceptional in modern American history. To a greater or lesser extent, every president since Wilson has been a War President. Each has committed our country to the pursuit of peace, yet involved us in a seemingly endless series of wars—conflicts that the American foreign policy establishment has generally made worse. The chief reason, argues Angelo Codevilla in Advice to War Presidents, is that America’s leaders have habitually imagined the world as they wished it to be rather than as it is: They acted under the assumptions that war is not a normal tool of statecraft but a curable disease, and that all the world’s peoples wish to live as Americans do. As a result, our leaders have committed America to the grandest of ends while constantly subverting their own goals.

Employing many negative examples from the Bush II administration but also ranging widely over the last century, Advice to War Presidents offers a primer on the unchanging principles of foreign policy. Codevilla explains the essentials—focusing on realities such as diplomacy, alliances, war, economic statecraft, intelligence, and prestige, rather than on meaningless phrases like “international community,” “peacekeeping” and “collective security.” Not a realist, neoconservative, or a liberal internationalist, Codevilla follows an older tradition: that of historians like Thucydides, Herodotus, and Winston Churchill—writers who analyzed international affairs without imposing false categories.

Advice to War Presidents is an effort to talk our future presidents down from their rhetorical highs and get them to practice statecraft rather than wishful thinking, lest they give us further violence.

From Publishers Weekly
Writing explicitly for an audience that is already familiar with international affairs, Codevilla (The Character of Nations) draws on examples from ancient Greece through the Iraq War to provide a road map for future foreign policy in this accessible but didactic book. In a series of chapters arranged thematically around concepts that include the language of politics and the effectiveness of diplomacy, the author takes issue with the realist, liberal nationalist and neoconservative schools of thought and their ruinous counsel that dominates contemporary international politics, instead advocating a commonsense approach that emphasizes mastering the basic skills of diplomacy and statecraft. Codevilla appeals to the Monroe Doctrine and 19th-century American approaches to foreign affairs while condemning contemporary policy that he believes has failed to secure a lasting peace. Codevilla writes intelligently on topics as diverse as the affect of economic sanctions on Iraq in the 1990s and contemporary relations between Russia and Georgia, but his highly critical style can sometimes be abrasive. Excellent book with a few caveats
By Joseph M. Hennessey
I will not even pretend to be a military or diplomatic professional; after all, the book was not really only for [future] war presidents, or Professor Codevilla would have only sold a few to some egocentric wannabes. I am in the well-read amateur/highly interested citizen category, to which i think the book is pitched.

Usually, I think the best way to write a book review is to find the author's premise, and then assess whether s/he accomplished what s/he set out to do. On p. xii we read "Losing wars while winning battles is hard and rare. Yet American presidents and their advisers have managed to do just that for nearly a century. This requires explanation. This book is about dissecting ruinous counsel about war and peace. In the course of clearing rubbish, I hope to uncover sound principles and distill them into advice for future war presidents." On that scale, I would assert that the author completely succeeded in "dissecting" and "clearing," and uncovers and distills principles only slightly less successfully, probably because the future is so, well, unpredictable.

Note that Codevilla generally wrote about US foreign policy sorrows and joys for about the past century. Woodrow Wilson is one of his main bogeymen, and for good reason, getting us into all sorts of trouble for his quixotic quests, which were really being led by his wife and advisers at the end of his regime. But I wish Codevilla had more firmly pinned the tail on the elephant, William McKinley, for it was during his regime that the United States made a sharp U-turn from the wise, prudent 'no entanglements' uber-policy of Washington and successors. McKinley rushed us into the too-easy Spanish American War, largely because the Catholics in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines needed to be Christianized/Protestantized, and we have been building ships, bases and a quasi-empire ever since.

I thoroughly agree with him that a truly realistic, as opposed to a materialist/realist foreign policy, would have a much more profound, sympathetic appreciation for the place of religion in international dynamics. Exactly because western Europe and the two coasts of the US have become largely secularized, means that we have a huge blind spot, a tin ear, in that regard, and have to study extra hard to comprehend the 3/4 of the world that is religious.

Underlying the Professor's 'advice' is a Machiavellian and Hobbsian philosophical foundation, unpleasant in interpersonal relations, but world politics ain't beanbag.

I enjoyed Codevilla's terse and sometimes pungent prose, and highly recommend this book.

Unconventional Wisdom
By Book Guy
Another eye opening book from Angelo Codevilla. His views on foreign policy are likely to be so different from what you normally hear on the Sunday morning shows that reading this book is a breath of fresh air.

Unfortunately, I can only give this book 4 stars because Professor Codevilla fails in his discussion of the "Surge" in Iraq. He essentially characterizes it as a continuation of the unrealistic occupation he has criticized since 2003. However, the Surge is actually a great example of exactly the sort of realism Codevilla advocates (as opposed to the sterile Scowcroftian variety). Al Qaeda in Iraq represented the Islamist movement in the Arab world, a force Codevilla has elsewhere recognized as a real response by the Islamic world to their corrupt secular regimes. As the mosque represents the only surviving element of civil society, and the Islamic world takes its religion seriously, the Islamist movement is readily comprehensible as a political force.

In Iraq, rather than wishing things were other than they were, we allied ourselves with the enemies of our enemies, who were more than willing to work with us to kill them. Unlike Codevilla's pretended epistemological uncertainty, in the real world, the ex-Baatthist and tribal levies in the Sons of Iraq (while perhaps not who we would want serving on our local school board) were clearly the enemies of our enemies, and more than willing to kill them. Our enemy, Al Qaeda in Iraq, by word and deed had made clear that they would fight to the death and commit any outrage to gain control of Iraq. Their atrocities had the effect of causing many in the Islamist movement to reconsider their approach. About this, everyone on the ground, Iraqi and American, was in agreement. At a certain point, you can't continue to discount the eyewitnesses.

Leaving aside the question of to what extent Saddam's regime had encouraged the Islamists to make war against America, by the time of the Surge, Saddam was long dead, and the Sons of Iraq were no more willing to fight for his cause than the Germans were for Hitler in 1948. The Islamists were our real enemies because, by the time of the Surge, they and only they had committed themselves by word and deed to the destruction of the West in general and America in particular. Who can argue with this? It is one thing to say the Islamist movement was infected and directed by the Arab and Pakistani intelligence services - it is another to suggest that the movement is without independent existence.

Similarly, his discussion of the Sadrists and Mahdi Army is inadequate, because these forces are clearly Iranian proxies. The Islamic Republic is the child of the Islamist movement, although Shia rather than Sunni, and successfully in control of the Iranian nation state. While the unwillingness to accept that we were at war with Iran can and should be criticized, what is the point of criticizing an alliance with those in Iraq who wanted to fight them? Similarly, Codevilla would agree that, if we are afraid Iraqi Shiites will fall under the control of Iran, this suggests that Iran is our real enemy and that we make war against them as well (which he advocates elsewhere in his book). Similarly, Al Qaeda in Iraq were also quite clearly funded by, and proxies for, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf emirates, who were using them to achieve their own objective of advancing Wahabist Islam in an effort to stabilize their own regimes and to keep jihadists from attacking Saudi princes. Like Laurent Murawiec, we can call on America to be realistic about friends and enemies in Saudi Arabia.

This realism about friends and enemies is precisely what Codevilla has called for in numerous other places in his work. That he discounts it in actual practice in Iraq unfortunately appears to be the Washington game of "not invented here": since Codevilla did not call for a significant change of counterinsurgency tactics, believing any such change futile and counterproductive, when it worked, he was unable to admit his own error. I think part of this has to do with his unfortunate tendency to read mainstream media sources like the NY Time uncritically, as if this were still a time when journalists could be trusted to report the news in the news sections of the paper, regardless of what was opined in the op-ed pages. Actually speaking to U.S. soldiers on the ground revealed a very different story.

Fascinating - more than a little bit frightening as well!
By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson
I was first introduced to Angelo Codevilla through his American Spectator article, America's Ruling Class. I wanted to know more about the man, so I checked with my library and found a copy of his book, Advice to War Presidents. In this fascinating book, the author points out that since the Wilson administration just about every U.S. President has had to lead the country during a time of war. According to Mr. Codevilla, the U.S. diplomats were partially responsible for the war, and they inevitably botched it - losing the peace that the military leaders had won. In this book, the author examines the history of America statecraft in the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, and then he goes on to show what correct statecraft should look like.

Overall, I found this to be a fascinating book. It's more than a little bit frightening to learn just how out of touch with reality our diplomats and other leaders are, and how their failures have made our position in the world worse and worse over the years. This is a very interesting book, and I hope that American leaders present and future read it...for all our sakes!

Best book I've read on abusive, controlling men.
By T.D. Hart
I've been out of a psychologically abusive relationship with a narcissist for just over a year and have read literally dozens of books describing how to come to grips and recover from the damage of abuse, but this is by far the most complete description of the behavior I experienced. Bottom line (and this is life changing): He is 100% responsible for his behavior and I am 100% responsible for my behavior. His anger and blaming and excuses all stem from his feeling entitled to control my life, my sexuality, my career goals, my self esteem. His contempt for women is the problem, and all my attempts to compromise and give more only enforced his delusion. No other book made it so clear. I'm far better off--and so are my kids--living a life free of abuse.

This Book Will Haunt You. Please Please Read It.
By J. E. Marlin
This is a book about abusive relationships. You will notice that `abuse' is nowhere in the title. I suspect this is because everyone has their own definition of what constitutes abuse, and it almost never covers what they themselves are doing - or being subjected to - are seeing and are concerned about. So, with a title like "angry and controlling men," they are more likely to pick up the book, thinking, "Hey, this might apply to the confusing situation I am facing."

Can a man abuse a woman without physically harming her? Yes. He can scream at her. He can throw things around the house. He can vandalize her property. He can routinely blame her for everything that goes wrong in his life, or he can constantly critique her and tear her down, or he can call her names that when I tried to put them in this review, got it banned from Amazon.

This does not mean that just any unpleasant behavior earns the title abuse. Bancroft uses the word "abuse," but he does not use it irresponsibly. For example, he says that if someone is angry all the time, "I would not like it," but it is not necessarily abuse.
Abuse is not a binary kind of behavior that is only invoked when the fists fly, but a deeply ingrained, unrepentant attitude of ownership, entitlement, contempt and resentment that a man displays, not toward most people in his life, but toward "his" woman (including past women). Does it always escalate into physical abuse? Not always. It can still be extremely destructive, even if it never does.

Does this sound hard to read? It is. Despite being written in a very readable style, this book is in some ways torture to read. The only thing worse would be to live it. I recommend that everyone who can stand to, should read this book, because it clears up so much of the confusion that prevails in abusive situations ... confusion in the mind of the victims, the observers, and even (especially?) the professionals.

Even if you only read the first three or four chapters, you will be far ahead. The very first chapter, titled "The Mystery," begins with the confusion felt by victims (who might not see themselves as victims) and their friends, as they try to understand the situation and the abuser. "He says I'm too sensitive. Maybe I am." "Have I changed or has he changed?" "Why does he DO that?"

This confusion is created by the abuser himself, in his highly successful attempts to justify himself to himself, to his victim, and to the people around him. Bancroft did not did start out with this assumption, by the way, but came to it after years of working with abusers in mandatory counseling groups. When he started out, he believed what the abusers told him about how their behavior was caused by their wives' failings, their traumatic childhoods, their unemployment, or the hurts done them by past girlfriends; that they didn't know what they were doing; that they "lost control." Only after several years did the author start to cotton on to the lies.

Also confusing is the fact that many abusers can actually be kind (yes, kind) in between abusive incidents.

Add to this the fact that the victim may indeed have some mental problems of her own (alcoholism, depression, etc.), either predating the abuse or brought on by it. If she has lived with abuse long enough, she may be barely functional. The abuser, meanwhile, is functional in his life at large (except when it comes to treating his wife well), and appears to be a sane, trustworthy person. To top it all off, he has told her many times that his behavior is her fault. (In fact, he may accuse her of abusing him ... referring to her attempts to defend herself.)

Small wonder, then, that the abused woman, her friends, and society at large cannot figure out what her problem is. If they start from the assumption that the abuser is a decent guy who means well, they will never figure out the situation. There are decent guys who mean well. This book is not about them.

This book is admirably free of psychobabble. For example, in one chapter Bancroft examines in some detail a frustrating conversation between a whiny, controlling man and his wife, which ends with him insisting on walking home in the cold, even though she would be willing to drive him. The author then analyzes why the man chose to walk home and resent it. Of course, his main motive is to maintain the role of victim, to keep himself in the right and his wife in the wrong, so that he can tell himself (and tell everyone else later) how she "left him" to walk home in the cold. Bancroft then adds, "Also, deep down inside [the man] there is a human being who knows that what he is doing is wrong."

In another place, he says, "Most people, when you confront them about something they are doing wrong, get defensive and deny it at first. But later, when they have had some time to cool down, they will come back and admit you were right. Abusers do not do this. They use the passage of time to find additional arguments about why they are right."

One last note. There is a fascinating, counterintuitive warning (late in the book), that women in abusive situations should not seek couples' counseling. "Couples' counseling is designed for problems that are mutual." Abuse is not mutual. It is unilateral. It is not the result of a communication problem. Furthermore, couples' counseling can be dangerous (!) for the wife. The reassuring presence of the counselor might get the wife to open up and say things to, or about, her husband that she would never otherwise dream of uttering. Then, when they get home (or even, in one chilling case, in the car on the way home), she can face violent retaliation.

This book will haunt you, but definitely read it. It might help you someday to help someone else, even if it is only by being the only person who believes her.

Confusing behavior makes a lot more sense now
By Carolyn Hasenfratz
This was a really painful book for me to read and this is going to be a really painful review to write.

I once had an employer who fit the emotionally abusive criteria in this book. When he first hired me, he treated me very well. He praised my abilities often. He gave me credit for increased business. He sent me to training and paid for it. He gave me the second best office in the building after his. I thought I had the best boss ever – so much better than all the ones I’d had before. I worked really hard for this boss, and it was my pleasure. It’s nice to have my hard work acknowledged and appreciated!

After a few very happy years, I started noticing that he seemed to be undermining my projects and encouraging other employees to keep information from me that would help me do my job. It didn’t seem to matter if clients were being harmed in the process. No boss would do that, would he? I was just being paranoid, wasn’t I? He started discouraging me from learning new things. He started telling me I didn’t have the ability to learn what I wanted to learn. Then one day he insulted me in front of other employees, then tried to talk me into quitting. When I wouldn’t agree to quit without finding a new job first, he fired me. Then he asked if we could still be friends!

This behavior was unlike any I’d ever experienced before, and I found it baffling. I didn’t enjoy the process, but I got over it pretty quickly because I found a better paying job with an even better boss within 18 hours. I’d noticed this boss lying to other people in the past – I just need to be more skeptical about people who lie, right? If I ever meet someone like this again I’ll be able to recognize it, won’t I?

During the summer before last, I started dating a guy. I was really impressed by how he treated me. He opened doors for me. He made baked goods for me. He showed me lots of affection. He seemed interested in what I said and when I did nice things for him he expressed appreciation. It was wonderful to finally be in a relationship where I was treated well – so much better than all the others. I met his friends and family. Nobody warned me to watch out. For months he talked often of our future life together. We discussed where we’d like to have a wedding, what kind of reception, where we’d live, whether to get a trailer so we could haul two kayaks. I’d never caught him in a lie about his background or work or anything like that. I’d never seen him lie to anyone else – I thought he was an honest guy. When he said he loved me I believed him.

For several months he had also been suggesting there might be something wrong with me, like ADD. I thought he was trying to help me. Several times he expressed doubt about my ability to manage money even though I have no debt and he has quite a bit. He seemed less interested in my activities and interests but he still feigned enough to satisfy me. One night this past summer he talked about where to go on a honeymoon and the very next day, he told me he’d been thinking about breaking up with me for months. Why? Because he was angry that I had a garden and rented an art studio, plus I didn’t make enough money to suit him. He tried to talk me into breaking up with him but when I wouldn’t he did it a few days later. He said he still wanted to be friends later!

Well, here I was taken in by the same kind of emotionally abusive person again, going through the exact same stages again, only this time it was much more hurtful because I had really loved him and was changing my plans for my life to include him in it. I thought I was safe with him but he wanted to hurt me for having interests and accomplishments. What is wrong with me that I am vulnerable to this kind of abuse? How can I avoid getting sucked in again?

I read this book hoping to get answers, and I learned a lot. There are certain subtle warning signs that I will pay more attention to next time, although I’m not sure how early one can detect abuse if the person is really good at hiding it. My ex-boyfriend is a very good actor and he had apparently read up on what signs to try to hide – he seemed to cover his tracks ahead of time on so many of the characteristics I should have been looking for. According to the author they do try to hide these things until they are sure you really love them and won’t let go so easily. There are guidelines to tell whether an abuser is a good candidate for change and how to tell if they are changing. I realize I’m lucky I got dumped because the vast majority do not change. Some of them dump you as a punishment for not agreeing with them on everything. How do you know if you’ve been abused? This book will help you figure that out. Lying to someone for months is abuse, for example. There are chapters in the book that address when the relationship goes further than ours did – what to do when you’re financially dependent, if there are kids, if you fear it’s not safe to get out, if it escalates to physical violence. It was helpful to read about some of the things I’ve been spared. My emotionally abusive boss had been taken into custody for physically assaulting his wife, I found out later from public records, so the pattern described in the book sure does fit. It’s reassuring to read that my abusers wanted me to think there is something wrong with me so I’d be easier to control but they may have attacked me precisely because there is a lot RIGHT with me and it feeds their ego to hurt me because I am so accomplished. Their incomprehensible behavior now makes sense – making you feel great in the beginning is a tactic called “Love Bombing”. Trying to confuse you or make you doubt yourself is called “Gaslighting”. Learn about lots more tactics in here.

This book was hard for me to read and digest, but there are things in here that everyone needs to know. I felt better just reading the reviews so I knew this would be a good book for me to read. Abuse isn’t just a problem that makes women suffer – my male co-worker was a victim of a brutal crime last week. What is the difference between violent crime and abuse? Both involve someone thinking that they are entitled to cause others’ suffering to meet their own selfish needs. Read this to arm yourself against abuse.

Review of "Character Animation with Poser Pro"
By Dale A. Nichols
Even if I don't own Poser Pro as yet I have Poser 7 and this also covers that. I see so few actions such as walking and lifting an object by way of animation. There's PoserFusion with Cinema 4D and I only have LightWave 9. Great showing of how to 3D motion reference video.

Not if you're serious....
By Realsurf
I've been using Poser for 3-4 years now - just fooling around with animation. I origionally ordered this book back in May 08, then it became unavailable, then it reappeared. I immediately reordered and am VERY disappointed in the content. It extremely simplistic and barely touches the power in Poser animation. The animation examples shown are not even close to the quality of animations included with Poser. There a a great number of websites that cover amimation MUCH better.
Another note, the author creates some of the ugliest animation I have ever seen. All of his figures lurch around like Frankenstein. There is no grace or smoothness - even in the final render of his lesson! Mr. Mitchell could learn a lot for a guy out there named Stimuli. He does adult animations but is light years ahead of Mitchell in technique.
This book is a total waste of money.

Come on seriously
By Mercyme25
I know they say don't judge a book by its cover but come on, the cover for this book clearly sets the tone for how basic and simple this book is gonna be, when it comes to graphic book covers they put there best foot forward and thats it, you gotta know your buying a simple book with simple tutorial and simple examples, advanced posers beware, people new to poser enjoy.

An excellent informative book
By Noel Downs
An excellent informative book. The early background although not necessary made the book a thoroughly enjoyable read. Some of the diagrams could have been placed better however I understand why they were not (would have broken the flow of the text). Still it was simple and straight forward, easy to read and easy to follow. Not something for the novice to try but if you already massage your horse this is the next logical step to home management of your pony's health and wellbeing.

Practical humorous (dry) instruction in chiropractic horse moves
By Amazon Customer
Informative instruction. To the point. Delivered with some dry humour and sometimes with tongue in cheek. No fluffing around and emotionally weighted statements. Not brought as a religion. Great read. It would be great if there was a practical day to follow up the booklet with. There is some video support on the internet where some of the moves are being demonstrated. This is a very helpful book for interested vets and other people with sufficient prior anatomical and horse knowledge. This book sparked further interest in the subject. I will buy "The Well Adjusted Dog" next.

must have
By Victoria Hall
I bought this book to help me with my mule since we do not have a valid equine chiro within a 300 mile radius.

This book is well written, the descriptions of treatment and pictures are well done. I'm a sonographer so the descriptions were easy for me to understand, I think they would be too for someone non medical.

With this book and the massage for preformance horses dvd, my mule is sound finally. Had he not been, he would be on a 5hr one way road trip to denver next weekend.

I thank the guy that wrote this and my mule thanks you too.

Modern Medea: A Family Story of Slavery and Child-Murder from the Old South, by Steven Weisenburger

The first in-depth historical account of the events that inspired Toni Morrison's novel Beloved.

In the middle of a frigid Sunday night in January 1856, a twenty-two-year-old Kentucky slave named Margaret Garner gathered up her family and raced north, toward Cincinnati and freedom. But Margaret's master followed just hours behind and soon had the fugitives surrounded. Thinking all was lost, Margaret seized a butcher knife and nearly decapitated her two-year-old daughter, crying out that she would rather see her children dead than returned to slavery. She was turning on her other three children when slave catchers burst in and subdued her.

Margaret Garner's child-murder electrified the United States, inspiring the longest, most spectacular fugitive-slave trial in history. Abolitionists and slaveholders fought over the meaning of the murder, and the case came to symbolize the ills of the Union in those last dark decades before the Civil War. Newspaper columnists, poets, and dramatists raced to interpret Margaret's deeds, but by the century's end they were all but forgotten. Steven Weisenburger is the first scholar to delve into this astonishing story in more than a century. Weisenburger integrates his innovative archival discoveries into a dramatic narrative that paints a nuanced portrait of the not-so-genteel Southern culture of slavery and its destructive effect on all who lived in and with it.

Amazon.com Review
"This is a story of slavery and child-murder, and it begins in northern Kentucky."

Toni Morrison's Beloved was based on a real incident: an 1856 infanticide committed by 22-year-old Margaret Garner, a runaway slave who, when recapture was imminent, cut her daughter's throat with a butcher's knife. "The ensuing public opinion battle raged for months," writes Steven Weisenburger. For the abolitionist movement, "no case more incisively revealed the pathology of slavery, and no deeds better symbolized the slave's tragic heroism." But to those in favor of slavery, "her deeds demonstrated that slaves were subhuman. Only a beast would kill its offspring, they reasoned, so Margaret's child-murder proved the bondservant's need for Southern slavery's kindly paternal authority."

Weisenburger's account of Garner's life has a novelistic flair of its own, laying out the facts in crisp detail. He guides readers through the controversial month-long trial and its aftermath, with her return into bondage and, for a time, obscurity. Modern Medea provides a rich understanding of the realities of life in the antebellum South and the legal and cultural battles that took place over the institution of slavery.

From Library Journal
The events that inspired Toni Morrison's Pulitzer Prize-winning Beloved (LJ 9/1/87), recently released as a film starring Oprah Winfrey, are the subject of this true account by Weisenburger (English, Univ. of Kentucky; Fables of Subversion: Satire and the American Novel, Univ. of Georgia, 1995). The gruesome act of Margaret Garner, who killed her children rather than allowing them to be slaves ("Let us go to God rather than go back to slavery"), touched off a firestorm of controversy just a few years before the Civil War. Weisenburger is the first scholar to attend to this drama that uncovered dirty truths about our nation's past and the burning drive to escape bondage. He details not only the crime of infanticide and a desperate mother but skillfully portrays the country, the South, and the lives of both slaves and whites. Weisenburger integrates scholarly research and a fine narrative approach in relating this "drama of disunion, a prelude to fratricidal war."?Kay Meredith Dusheck, Univ. of Iowa, Anamosa

From Booklist
In Beloved (1987), Toni Morrison drew on a long-forgotten historical incident to produce a fictional masterpiece. In Modern Medea, English professor Weisenburger explores that incident and its impact on contemporaries. In January 1856, a family of slaves named Garner left Kentucky and crossed the Ohio River to Cincinnati. Within 24 hours, a posse knocked on the door of the relatives' home where they had stopped. The Garners resisted. When the posse burst in, it found that Margaret Garner had cut the throat of her three-year-old daughter, Mary, and cut, but not seriously injured, older sons Tom and Sam; she did not want them to return to slavery. The capture, court action, and return of the Garners to their owner was a cause celebre, symbolizing different certainties for slavery's attackers and defenders. Recent studies of domestic life under slavery and records of the court cases and the (better-documented) lives of the white Southerners and Northerners involved are among Weisenburger's sources in recapturing what Margaret Garner did that day. Very accurate research
By Dr Jacques COULARDEAU
This is a historical book that tries to reconstruct the case of Margaret Garner identified as The Modern Medea by the painter Thomas Satterwhite in 1867. She is also evoked in a poem by Mary A. Livermore, The Slave Tragedy of Cincinnati, in the New York Tribune on February 3, 1856, in a long poem, The Night of Freedom, by William Wallace Hebbard recited on March 18, 1856 and in another shorter poem by Frances Harper, The Slave Mother, A tale of the Ohio, published in 1874. These three references do not identify her to Medea. Finally her case is in the background of Toni Morrison's Beloved.

The events took place in the winter 1856 in Kentucky and Ohio, Covington on one bank and Cincinnati on the other bank of the Ohio river. A family, three generations and eight people, of slaves escape from Kentucky to Ohio across the river that is frozen in the night from Sunday January27 to Monday January 28. The Garners go to some acquaintances, the Kites who try to get them to the close-by Underground Railroad Station but for unclear reasons the house is besieged by the police at 10 and they are arrested at 12. During the scuffle the Mother, Margaret kills her 3 year old daughter and tries to kill one of her sons and stuns the other. The only one she does not attack is her 9 month old infant.

The case is taken to court but it will last more than a month, though the US Fugitive Slave Laws (1793 and 1850) specifically states that the only element to check is the property right of the owners or claimant over the fugitive slaves. Kentucky is a slave state whereas Ohio is not, and that complicates things.

Two legal problems are raised by the defense.

The first one is that both Robert and Margaret (the younger generation parents) had been brought when children to Ohio by their masters on visits, but since slavery is not recognized by the Ohio Constitution, as soon as they stepped into Ohio they were freed. But the two concerned slaves were young and they were taken back to Kentucky. The question is to know whether that short sojourn in the past with their safe return to Kentucky could be considered as making the slaves free. It will be ruled that it does not.

The second is that a capital crime was committed by one of the fugitive slaves and the others were accessories. Then there is a contradiction. For the capital crime in Ohio, the people who commit such a crime are supposed to be brought to court according to the habeas corpus procedure. They are thus treated as human beings in Ohio and are de facto freed if this habeas corpus procedure is implemented. On the other hand they are slaves, hence a piece of property was destroyed by another piece of property and hence there is no capital crime, only the destruction of some property. And it is this sole question of property that has to be considered according to the Fugitive Acts. The court will finally only consider this question of property considering that the habeas corpus procedure can only apply to human beings recognized as such, in the words of the court "the slave does not possess equal rights with the free-man". This decision is finally taken on Tuesday February 26, 1856.

The captives are thus remanded to slavery and their owners on February 28. They embark on the Henry Lewis ship on March 7 but the ship Edward Howard rams into the previous one and causes its sinking. In those circumstances Margaret drowns her infant child by throwing her into the water and she tries to drown herself by jumping into the river. She is saved by the black cook of the ship who dives and brings her back. They reach their owner's plantation on March 10, full in the cotton season and are probably sent o work: the older generation of parents, the younger generation of parents and the two surviving sons, in the fields because housework is banned for escapees.

This case was heavily used in the debate leading to the Civil War on both sides.

This mother killing to of her children was shown as a monstrous un-person by slave-owners.

But on the other hand she was shown as inspired by a revolutionary spirit and that she preferred entrusting her children to the angels of God to letting them go back into slavery. She was used equally by male abolitionists and by female abolitionists and feminists to enhance the fight against slavery as well as the fight for women's rights. The feminist and abolitionist Lucy Stone testified in court and brought up three arguments. A religious argument with a quotation from the Bible, Deuteronomy 23:15 that states an escaped slave or servant does not have to be given back to his or her previous owner, escaping meaning freedom. Then the fact that Gaines, the owner of these slaves, would have promised to Lucy Stone to free Margaret when she is back in Kentucky, and Lucy Stone insists on the fact he has to hold his promise that he denies of course. The third argument is that the children have "faded faces", meaning they are mulattos born from a union imposed onto Margaret by her owner. This last element leads to the idea of some kind of vengeance against the rapist owner, though a slave-owner must not give a lot of value to the children he may get from his slaves, except that they can be sold, even if they are his own sons or daughters.

A true story of slavery and infanticide
By gac1003
In February 1857, slave Margaret Garner fled from her master Archibald Gaines's Kentucky plantation. She, her husband Robert, his parents, and their four children crossed the frozen Ohio River in Cincinnati, hiding out in the cabin of one of Margaret's cousins, a free black. Gaines quickly trailed them to the cabin, and, in one quick moment, Margaret picked up a knife and killed one of her children, not wanting any of them to go back into slavery.
In "Modern Medea," author Steven Weisenburger uses court documents, newspaper stories and other sources from the time to examine this almost-forgotten trail that challenged the 1850 Fugitive Slave Law. We follow along with the entire trial, seeing all the tricks that both defense and prosecution lawyers used to either bring a quick end to proceedings or to protract them in order to keep the Garners on free soil. The trail also gives us an interesting look into politics, the pro-slavery mindset, abolitionism view, and the media perception and bias of the time.
What I found most interesting about this book is that the trial to determine whether or not the Garner's were still the property of Archibald Gaines took precedent over the charge of infanticide. The outcome would have a profound effect not only on state's rights but would spark a tiny flame leading up to the American Civil War. And even after the trial was concluded, the media, poets such as Elizabeth Barret Browning, and other authors used the events to add fuel to the ever-growing debate on slavery.
But, it still remains a little-known trial, falling into the dust of history in part due to public "whitening" of the events and to the events of the Dred Scott decision almost a year later. Yet author Toni Morrison helped to revive interest in this trial by modeling one of the characters in her novel "Beloved" after the ghost of Margaret's slain daughter, Mary.
The book sometimes reads more like a college text and asks many questions that are never answered. But the amount of information surrounding the trial and concerning the battle of state's rights versus federal law make this a great book to read.

The story behind (or beside) Morrison's Beloved
By A Customer
Weisenburger, with a meticulous eye and a careful hand, vividly retells the story of Margaret Garner, whose case (or rather, one account of whose case) was the seed from which Toni Morrison grew the central stalk of her novel Beloved. It is not exactly facts that he gives us -- Weisenburger is too careful a critic, too aware of the complex nature of the historical record -- but around what facts can be found, he has written a novel of his own, one which richly complements Morrison's though-experiment with the historical legacy of slavery.
Garner's case, though little recalled today, was far better known in its day than many readers of Morrison's novel may realize. The best-known lawyers and abolitionists of the day argued Garner's case, and newspapers across the country reported the story. The most fascinating aspect of the story is the account of the competing legal and rhetorical strategies used to try to free Garner -- or, if she could not be freed, to give her the greatest possible symbolic value for the cause.
Garner's act -- killing one of her children rather than allowing het to be returned to slavery -- placed her between two contrary legal systems. Within the slavery system, and the Federally- administered Fugitive Slave Act, Garner was a piece of property to be returned. Yet within Ohio law, as a person accused of murder, she was subject to persecution for her crime as a human being. Her lawyer, paradoxically, had to persuade a judge to issue a writ for her arrest for murder, in order to prevent her from being returned to Kentucky as a slave -- it was in fact her one hope.
Weisenburger details how, in the end, this defense too failed, partly due to the complicity of certain Ohio officials with the Kentucky counterparts, and partly due to the inaction of then-governor of Ohio Salmon Chase. The actual tale of Margaret Garner, strangely enough, is even more tragic than that of Morrison's Sethe. Margaret was shipped off to cotton-belt slavery with relatives of her Kentucky owner, losing a second child to a streamboat accident en route, and evenrually died a horrible death from typhoid fever.
I'd recommend this book to anyone engaged by Morrison's novel, or by the recent film -- not as 'the fact behind the fiction,' but instead as a vital counterpoint, an *other* story of Margaret Garner, a woman who stood at the razor's edge of on of American history's most brutal junctures.
