This book will provide a reader with a good chance of mathematical training.
When plasma equations need to be modified, just qualitative understanding of plasma theory will not be helpful so much.

Good text but homework problems too easy

The text was nicely written and describes a lot of phenomena but the homework problems were way too easy and most of the time did not even require the knowledge presented in the chapters. For example, many of the problems were of the form "plug this into the quadratic equation" or "add these two equations and simplify". Without problems that present a test of knowledge it was hard for me to solidify my reading or to know whether I really understood it. That criticism aside, the author was able to present a lot of information in an understandable form without getting needlessly bogged down in details.

Chen is the standard for a reason

The standard book for introductory plasma physics is "Introduction to Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion" by Francis Chen. Unfortunately, the semester I took the course, the professor chose to use this text. It lacks any worked-through examples and has no answers to any of the problems so you have little assurance that you are understanding the concepts. Furthermore, the authors have a bad habit of stating, "It is easily shown that ..." and then never showing the derivations, nor providing information on where such derivations may be found. The result is a collection of random equations with a binding and pretty cover. I consistently find myself turning to alternate texts to clarify the material presented in this text. If you are forced to use this book, make certain you have access to a copy of Chen's book and start reading there.

A Comfort to the Restless Souls

I read Herman Hesse’s Wandering and wanted to highlight the whole thing. There are very few passages here with which I could not identify. If you have a wanderlust, if you are on a journey with no particular destination, or find no great satisfaction with staying or going – a certain anguish in either prospect, then you will love Wandering.

When your soul wants to settle, but your mind and body keep wandering, it can be upsetting for those who don’t consider themselves to be peripatetic. One preponderant theme here, though, is that “Home” is a place not to leave or return to; rather, “Home is within you or home is nowhere at all.” So if Home eludes you, then you are looking in the wrong place. Also, there exists a certain sentimentality that holds hands with the past, to that place that you used to call Home, to that life you used to live. Reality is obfuscated by the present vantage of long gone days. Perfection is an illusion.

Hesse also addresses the paradox that he lives – he wants to be a poet and a middle-class person simultaneously. “I want silence, peace, and a middle-class life…and old books.” Are these contradicting notions? Can one be seemingly opposing entities? Think of it as a road that takes you on your journey – the same road that leads you home. It’s really the same road, yet it serves two contrary functions. A person can be more than one thing.

“Trees are sanctuaries.” Ah, this is something I have known my whole life, and Hesse devotes an entire chapter to these beings. Do you love trees? If so, you’ll love this chapter even more than the others.

All life ends, that’s no revelation. Hesse opines that to worry about most of it is a waste of time. This message was not lost on me, though my soul still struggles with this even if my head understands the notion. But at least I have this book to refer back to from time to time when I get lost in the wandering, the worrying, the longing. It’s such a comfort to restless souls to read these words.

Simply beautiful

I have just finished reading this book, and probably should not be attempting to write a review because words fail to describe how wonderful this book is. It is the most beautiful book I have ever read. It is written in Hesse's gentle, quiet style, and consists of metaphorical meditations on wandering. The imagery is graceful while the implications resound deep within one. Each sketch moved me deeply. This is Hesse at his best, a spiritual explorer, free of dogma, immersing himself and the reader in simple yet fascinating reflections. I plan on reading this book frequently, savoring each image and feeling the serenity created by Hesse's prose. I would urge everyone to read this book.

Wandering

I 'wandered' upon the first edition of this book at a yard sale, and once having begun it, was thrilled with every word and every turn of phrase. Hesse, in this lesser-known work, writes with beautiful symplicity and grace. Each short prose piece is accompanied by charming sketches, and each ends with one of Hesse's poems. Here Hesse reveals his deepest fears, hopes, and insights; which once read, will bring any wandering soul closer to enlightenment. Highly recommended!

Harry Potter Schoolbooks don't disappoint

It is wonderful to be able to read two of the books that Harry Potter reads during the course of his schooling. I especially liked that in the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them humorous notes are written in by Harry Potter (as if it was actually his copy of the book you are reading). The hand-written notes aren't on every page, but I enjoyed them wherever they cropped up. (You get to find out why Crookshanks is so smart. Rowling has said he is half Kneazle and Kneazles are detailed herein along with all the other magical creatures mentioned). Quidditch Through The Ages was great also. It is interesting to get the back story on why the golden snitch is used and what the bludgers are made of. The book also tells a little about all of the major Quidditch teams and different moves and penalties from the game. Both books have a foreword by Albus Dumbledore explaining them to Muggles. Rowling has done another great job on these two small books. They are a pretty quick read and very enjoyable. I would highly recommend them to any Harry Potter fan. They are very worth the money and you should buy yourself a copy if you haven't already.

If you cannot go to Hogwarts, let Hogwarts come to you

Although not a necessary addition to everyone's personal Harry Potter library, these two little books are quite interesting and a lot of fun to read. They are both quite short, totaling less than sixty five pages apiece, but they are wonderfully put together and made to look like copies of real books from the Hogwarts library. None other than Albus Dumbledore himself writes the introduction to each book, explaining how and why these books are being made available to Muggles for the first time and explaining how proceeds from each book go directly to a fund, set up in Harry Potter's name by Comic Relief UK and author J.K. Rowling, which is dedicated to help children in need throughout the world.
Quidditch Through the Ages, penned by Quidditch expert Kennilworthy Whisp explains the ultimate sport of wizards from top to bottom, giving the centuries-old history of the game as it has evolved. First and foremost, he explains why wizards and witches employ brooms to fly on in the first place, and then he proceeds to give an account of the changing rules of the game from its early days of primitive baskets set atop poles to the standardized and world-sweeping format of today. Of most significance and interest is the story of how the Golden Snitch was introduced into the sport. Different strategies and maneuvers are named and explained, the thirteen Quidditch teams of England and Ireland are identified, some of the seven hundred types of fouls are explained, and some of the most memorable games and individual performances are detailed (including the Tutshill Tornados' Roderick Plumpton's amazing snag of the Golden Snitch only three and a half seconds into a game back in 1921).
Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them by Newt Scamander is a compendium of all the fantastic beasts currently known, from the Acromantula to the Yeti. Prior to the actual listings, Scamander explains the criteria by which some beings have come to be labeled beasts (it's more complicated than you might think) and devotes some time to the obvious question as to why Muggles seem to spot such creatures only rarely. Each listing also carries the classification assigned each beast by the Ministry of Magic, which is important information given that these beasts range from the harmless to the controllable to the incredibly dangerous. Along with fascinating descriptions of the animals we have already encountered in the Harry Potter books, there are some real jewels of information included here, solving several Muggle mysteries such as that of the true identity of the Loch Ness Monster. Fantastic Beasts is a copy of Harry Potter's own personal copy of the book, and its margins are dotted with little notes ranging from the mundane to the bitingly funny written by Harry, Ron, as well as Hermione. Now, if we could only get our hands on A History of Hogwarts; I'm sure Hermione has a copy they can use for the printing of a Muggle edition.

2 great books to add to the collection

I am a huge Harry Potter fan & these 2 additional books are great. "Quidditch Through The Ages" really takes you into the history of this highly important sport to all of the wizarding world. It explains the game & the way the game balls have evolved over the years. It really made me understand this fictional game even more.
"Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them" describes various different animals, some pleasant, but most are not thru this text book. A few pictures drawn here & there, I think more pictures would have been nice, to give the reader a better idea what some of these creatures look like.
Another cute feature are the little handwritten comments by Harry, Ron & Hermoine throughout the books. Makes you feel a little like a first year student, using the books that they had used a few years ahead of you. I recommend these 2 books to any Harry Potter fan.

Good book on order picking methods

This book quickly covers the most common methods and equipment used to receive, move, store, pick, and ship materials within a warehouse environment. Much of the book focuses on the order-picking process, which makes it a good choice for fulfillment operations. Of particular interest is the detailed info on slotting as well as an objective discussion of the pros and cons of automation. The size of the book (only 233 pages) results in somewhat brief treatments of the various topics. On the plus side, this makes it a quick read for someone wanting to become familiar with warehouse operations, on the minus side you may find that you need to go to another resource to get more detailed info on a specific topic.

Interesting overall view for beginners in warehousing. It has a superficial treatment on very critical issues such as receiving and putaway. Also it's so focused on order picking (the author's experience) that provides an unbalanced view of Distribution Centers. It doesn't address any type of raw material warehousing insights, it focused more on finished goods distribution centers. Limited applicability of the content.

Great overview of concepts

I found the book helpful in learning some basics of warehousing. I appreciated the overview of various types of equipment and racking. The book focuses more on distribution systems but I found many of the concepts can be applied to MRO warehousing(zoning and slotting in particular)with some tweaking.
