could have been.....

have read and re-read several of cameron danes books greys awakening, a fostered love, something new. to see a new title i was excited, though at us$8 and only 1 review.

this could have been so much better, whether by an editor removing the over descriptions, the usage of the same phrasing, word for word, a chapter later. beta readers should have had the author tighten up, or outright object to some of the depictions (is that their job? i don't know, but i think that first readers should point out flaws in the flow of a story) for me 4 years of friendship & care, there should have been some making love not just effing. every single time. there was none.

i tried to go back too that first sentence that sent me over the edge of over description but i can't find it something about long black tendril's looping around his soul, or voice like rust, or....maybe i should of kept a notebook of them.

i invested an evening, then persevered a morning to get there, to booker & jed's hea. doubt i will read again.

Lots of Feels

4 Stars. I love Cameron Dane, and am a huge fan. I have read every book I could get my hands on and devoured and cherished them all.

The pacing was perfect. We meet Booker at 19 and he spends the next four years growing up. We see bits and pieces of Booker as he matures and struggles to hide his feelings for Jed. I think this was handled beautifully. Jed beginning to feel tingles of awareness of Booker was also lovely and exciting.

I don't usually dissect a book when I review, but this one has me trying to identify why I didn't fall head over heels for this book. I love angsty reads, if it makes me cry my tush off then it's practically a shoe in for my comfort food shelf. This book made me cry, ugly cries - a few times! Buuuut... *shrugs* I get that Jed had to face some really tough truths about himself - that would knock anyone on their ass. I agree everyone reacts differently to scary shit. Yet I had a hard time with how Jed went from alpha strong guy to needy and tragic. I got tired of the storm/black clouds metaphor and wanted to shake Jed and tell him to get a grip, and pull up his big boy pants. Which is awful, cause I'm normally the most sympathetic person you'll meet.

Booker though, gosh, I think I'm in love with him. To watch him grow and mature and handle some tough kicks and to keep going after Jed, his love - was wonderful. He learned to be strong when Jed could not, he tried to always put what was best for Jed first - even when he didn't have enough experience to know the right course. There is nothing sexier than watching someone do what needs to be done, even when it hurts. In the end love does conquer all and I loved the rock solid HEA.

A bit disappointing...

I'm a huge Cameron Dane fan. She's one of the authors who got me interested in the m/m genre to begin with, and I count several of her books in my top ten list of favorites. However, I was a bit disappointed in this one. So much so, in fact, that there were times I wondered if it was really the same author!

The concept of the story is interesting and the characters are well-rounded and beautifully flawed, which I think is one of Cameron Dane's strengths as a writer, but I felt like I was reading a first draft! (One particular paragraph even sounded like notes an author would make and not actual story!)

It was SO LONG!

I can usually read a Cameron Dane story in one sitting but this book took me three whole days to get through. I started skimming at one point because I felt like I'd heard it all before. It was slow and dragged horribly in several places, even during the sex scenes! The epilogue was way too long as well.

There are some major problems with over-description and repetitive words/phrases. One particular word has shown up in other stories, but I've always been able to overlook that as a quirk. In this one though, it appears SO many times, and sometimes twice in the same paragraph. It drove me nuts.

I have to wonder if this book was edited at all. I mean a serious, professional edit - not just letting friends read it and give feedback. I've done some editing for authors before, and the urge to get out my red pen and start marking this book up was almost overwhelming at times.

I'm disappointed in this story and it's not one I will be reading again. A good edit and a little bit of tweaking would do wonders here. I hope that happens.

If you've not read Cameron Dane before, please don't start with this one. She has so many fantastic books out there (Grey's Awakening, The Quinn Security Series), but this is just not one of them.

Whipple it good!

Simply put, this is the most important book on advertising you will ever read.

(I owned the first edition way back in the late 90s and it was so good that somebody stole it.)

So much has been updated in this fifth edition that I consider it a sequel/reboot, but in a very good way. It’s essential to those working on either the creative or account side of the biz, and written in Human English instead of Buzzspeak so you can actually get something out of what you’re reading.

“Hey, Whipple…” is truthfully a trade triumph.

If you work in advertising, you need this book (but please, buy a copy rather than steal one).

The best edition yet

This book has been rightly, for some time, the most practical guide to making ads. And the 5th edition is the best yet thanks to a brilliant section from Edward Boches on how digital is transforming creativity. Rather than the usual myopic view of digital as a channel, Edward looks at how digital is transforming the nature of business and therefore transforming how creative companies need to think and what they make. Highly readable and highly recommended.

Best squeeze yet-

Lee Clow endorses this book on the back cover.
I can't say anything that eclipses that. If you don't know who Lee Clow is- you probably shouldn't be in advertising, but, that's OK- after you read this book- you should be fully prepared- and know who Lee Clow is.
If you are in advertising, or in school learning about advertising, or a feckless client trying to learn how to advertise- buy this book.
Full disclaimer, my name is in the fifth edition- and I host and tweaked the website [...] for Luke, so he's a client, and he pays me- but, I'd recommend the book anyway. I did for the first 4 editions- and no money changed hands.
How good is this book? If my college professor had me read this instead of the shitty textbook put out by some PhD- I'd have been winning awards and making my clients money so much faster. But, unfortunately, I had to wait years for Luke to graduate from being in "The Copywriters Bible" to actually writing it....
at least the book I make every one in my small agency read as terms of their employment. I don't only insist employees read it, that goes for interns as well. And after years of asking clients to read it too- I finally had one read it- and felt like I was working on an account destined for a new level of greatness- because, well, a real understanding of the craft and science of advertising sure helps the creative process along.
I've read each edition. This one, with the additional chapters from Edward Boches, once again succeeds in explaining everything you need to know in order to create the 5% of advertising that matters- that engages, entertains, sells- as opposed to the 95% that was created for the TiVo skip button or adblockers on your browser.
While this book won't turn you into Lee Clow, Luke Sullivan, Alex Bogusky, Dan Wieden, David Droga or even me- it will help you know what good advertising is and how some of the greats have made it.
And, you'll enjoy reading it- because Luke writes good ;-)

Satisfying & Laugh-Out-Loud Funny!

Jennifer Salvato Doktorski's young adult novel Famous Last Words is one of those novels that makes you suddenly laugh aloud in a quiet room and leaves you with a warm, satisfied feeling upon finishing.

The novel follows 16-year old Sam, a summer intern at a local newspaper, the Herald Tribune. Among her other "intern scum" duties, Sam shares obituary duty with fellow intern AJ, a sarcastic college intern. The newspaper office is filled with quirky characters, from Harry, her armadillo-loving boss, to Tony, known as Coma Boy to the rest of the newspaper staff and summer crush to Sam. This summer is the beginning of something different for Sam... There's no lazing around the pool with her best friend Shelby, who just doesn't seem to understand why Sam works so much and has no interest in their usual summer activities. And Sam, usually reserved and shy, is finding her niche and her previously small social circle is expanding. This summer, she's breaking rules, keeping secrets, and learning, little by little, that a summer of writing obituaries might just teach her how to live.

I easily identified with the main character of Famous Last Words, Sam. She's a hard worker, rarely gets into trouble, is protective of her much wilder and social best friend, Shelby, and is generally shy and awkward in the situations Shelby thrives in. When Sam finds something that both challenges and suits her - writing for the Herald Tribune - she flourishes. I cringed when Sam embarrassed herself, got herself reprimanded, or something so obvious to the reader went right over her head (especially in the romance department!), but that also means I couldn't help but cheer for her when she was congratulated, loved, and finally, finally realized that everything she needed (romantically and otherwise) was right there for her to grab on to.

I highly recommend this sophomore offering from Jennifer Salvato Doktorski. I'm kicking myself for overlooking her first novel, How My Summer Went Up in Flames, which I will definitely be reading. Laugh-out-loud funny, briskly paced, and filled with memorable and quirky characters, Famous Last Words is fantastic pleasure read.

Sweet and Satisfying Contemporary Fiction

This story was sweet and cute and, oh so, satisfying. Sam D'Angelo is spending the summer before her senior year working for the local newspaper as an intern. Her main job is writing the obituaries. Her fellow interns are AJ and Tony. She loves being in the newspaper office even though it is separating her from her best friend Shelby who is spending their "last summer" partying and drinking.

Sam gets involved in writing feature obits which make her look into people's lives to write about what made them memorable. She also gets involved in investigating the mayor or a nearby town who seems to be hiring lots of people who never show up for work.

Sam also has to deal with romance. She and Shelby had a falling out when Shelby got a little drunk and told a fellow student who just happens to be the captain of the football team and student council president that Sam had a crush on him. And Sam did--when she was in junior high. But it was still an embarrassing thing for a friend to do. Then there is Tony at work. He is handsome and a real flirt who makes a play for Sam until Sam gets the assignment he wanted. Best of all, there is AJ who becomes her friend. It takes her quite a while to realize that AJ would like to be more than buddies.

I loved the family relationships in this story too. Sam has a great relationship with her lawyer parents. They are supportive and really care about her life. Sam also has a great relationship with her widowed grandmother who has lived with them since her husband died.

This was a story about growing up and accepting changes. Friendships changed. Relationships changed. And Sam changed as she started to learn what was important to her and what she wanted.

I really liked this story and can't wait to share it with my high students next Fall.

Famous Last Words -- FABULOUS!

Jennifer Salvato Doktorski has done it again. Just weeks after the release of her first young adult novel, (HOW MY SUMMER WENT UP IN FLAMES, which I loved) comes her second, FAMOUS LAST WORDS. As with Rosie, SUMMER's main character, Sam D'Angelo is a vulneralbe and extremely likeable teenager trying to find her place in the world. Her very real insecurities are extremely relatable, not only to teens but to any reader, of any age, and her summer job working as an intern at a local newspaper writing obits is more than entertaining. Another winner, FAMOUS LAST WORDS is sure to please. I can't wait for the next novel!
