Only study tool- passed the Praxis!

I took the Praxis in January of my second year of graduate school. I bought this book the summer before, started carrying it around 6 months before the test (there is a definite period where you carry it around without studying), started looking at it about 4 months before the test, and actually started to study intensively about 3 months before the exam. I alloted 1-week her chapter with an additional two weeks to take the practice test and study what I missed. Rather than taking a lot of notes and making flashcards, I highted the things that I didn't know (to look back over later). If there were areas that I had forgotten, I looked back at class notes and texts (and took a few notes). In addition, I took the quiz at the end of each chapter and studied the questions that I missed (i.e., found the answer and why that was the answer). After finishing the book, I bought a practice test from the Praxis website. I passed this, so I knew there was a good chance that I would pass the Praxis. I made sure to time myself and act it out like it was the real test to alleviate some axiety for the real test. I studied the questions that I missed, re-read my highlights, and re-read the end of the chapters as well as the quizes. The actual test seemed harder than the practice, but I received an even better score. The types of questions were very similar. Good luck! *Make sure to send your scores to ASHA before the test, or you will have to pay later. I made this mistake.

BEWARE: Flashdrive not included

A flashdrive with practice tests should come along with this book. I would not advise purchasing this book without the accompanying flashdrive. For the money, you can buy this through ASHA or ProEd WITH the flashdrive. I hope you learn from my mistake.

RIP OFF

If you need to prepare for the PRAXIS don't purchase from this buyer go directly to the proed website they offer the book and flashdrive with 4 praxis sample tests for 120 and this seller is selling the book alone for 150 and won't allow returns even though NOWHERE is it stated that all sales are final. The book is the best out there but don't buy it here. Good luck future SLPs!

Prescription for recovering freshness & passion

"Sacred Rhythms" came to me at a time when my woundings were keeping me from wanting to do what I knew I should. Desires tell you what's below the surface: if you don't heed the significance of your desires, you won't understand how your disappointments are causing your faith to "leak". Ruth Haley Barton's perspective brought breakthrough for me at a dangerous time.

This book is especially helpful to those who (like the author and me) have gotten burned out and need to recover freshness and passion for the very familiar. Reading "Sacred Rhythms" brought about perhaps the sweetest and gentlest restoration of faith I have ever experienced in my long walk. And it voiced some of my deepest longings FOR God. Her treatment of Psalm 139 was not only sweet, it finally gave me a satisfying answer for why a nasty imprecatory prayer "mars" an otherwise beautiful chapter (my words, not hers).

And for the first time, I found my own life's watchword expressed by the pen of another: "For the Christian person, the choices we make are always about love and which choice enables us to keep following God into love" (pp. 117-118). Gaining the capacity to "reliquish whatever might keep me from choosing for love" (p. 119) has become my life's quest in recent years. Never had I seen it expressed as winsomely as Barton does, however.

Still, Barton is careful not get the cart before the horse. The first portion of the book necessarily coaches us on how to "recognize the unconditional love and presence of God as the ultimate and unchanging reality of our life" (p.95). Read that again, and then ask yourself: "What if the ultimate (essential) and unchanging reality of my life really were the unconditional love and presence of God? How would my motivation and passion change?" Mine did, through soaking in the gentle message of this compelling book.

I have just begun reading this book and the intro and first chapters have hooked me.... In simple but concrete language , the author gently invites her readers to explore the longings of the heart as a way to open into the process of transformation, graciously introducing us to the ways we create space for that process to unfold. In simple terms, Barton makes the subject of spiritual transformation inviting and introduces ways into it through various spiritual practices/disciplines.
This a beautifully written book that I will delight in gifting to others who are awakening to the longings of their own hearts. A book I am happy to recommend!

Life Changing

A seminary friend invited me to participate in an 8-week book study and this was the book. Wow - I have to say it really came at an interesting time in my life where I was highly involved in our church but thinking that those activities were a substitute for my own personal study and reflection. The book and the group discussion literally changed how I framed my church involvement as well as my need for spiritual nourishment through solitude, prayer and study.

This is a wonderful book for any Christian looking to disconnect from the "shoulds" of the Christian journey and really deepen their spiritual intimacy. I think it applies to most of us in the modern church.

Daniel Petrocelli is the attorney who represented Fred Goldman and his family in their civil suit against O.J. Simpson for the death of their son Ron. (As such, he also coordinated the simultaneous prosecution of suits brought by Ron Goldman's biological mother and by the estate of Simpson's ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson.) In Triumph of Justice, Petrocelli tells readers how he was able to succeed where Marcia Clark and Chris Darden failed, convincing a jury that Simpson was indeed liable for the deaths of Goldman and Brown Simpson.

Petrocelli takes us behind the scenes, revealing how he got--and almost lost--the job soon after Simpson walked out of the criminal trial. He goes through rigorous depositions and cross-examinations in nearly complete detail, poking holes in Simpson's ludicrous alibi. Although he has very little good to say about Simpson (whose football exploits he admired before taking on the case), Petrocelli does have professional compliments for his legal adversaries. It's an important element to note--unlike other books from Simpson trial insiders, Triumph of Justice doesn't have aggrandizement or apologies for its author as the top priority. The definitive book on the Simpson case. Daniel Petrocelli and his fellow lawyers brilliantly dissected and debunked every myth about the Simpson case. I found the book very entertaining and well written and an excellent primer on how to do direct and cross examination of a witness.

The book also demonstrated the powerful differences between a criminal prosecution and a civil lawsuit. The plaintiff lawyers brilliantly used the civil rules of discovery to their benefit. They made a discovery demand for Simpson to provide all the evidence he had of any sort of police conspiracy, contaimination of evidence, evidence of any third party who did the murder, etc. Simpson could not produce a single piece of evidence to support any of these theories. And since he could not produce any such evidence, the court properly refused to allow him to argue those theories at trial. Trials are solely about what can be proven and disproven. They are not forums to throw out every cockamaimie theory you can come up with (the criminal trial in this case).

The civil rules also required Simpson to submit to "requests for admission" a powerful mechanism to reduce what has to be proven at a trial---if the opponent admits it, you don't have to prove it. Simpson had to admit that the blood collected at Bundy and in his car was his. And he had absolutely no evidence whatsoever to back up any claim that it was planted.

The civil rules also required Simpson to submit to a deposition and to testify at the trial. If he had refused to testify, he would've forfeited the case. And of course in his deposition and in his trial testimony he lied continuously and in easily provable ways. For every lie he gave the plaintiffs had one and usually at least two different witnesses to impeach Simpson, often testimony from his close friends, Taft, Cowlings, Kardashian and his estranged girlfriend Paula Barbieri, amongst others.

Finally, and most devastatingly, they found the photos of Simpson wearing the same shoes that were worn by the killer at the murder scene. Simpson had previously denied ever owning such shoes. And to try and debunk the photo? He brings in a kooky JFK conspiracy buff as his photo "expert". Then when 30 other photos from a different photographer show up, one of them printed in a newspaper 8 mo before the murders, the game was over for Simpson.

An innocent man doesn't have to lie when he's on trial. Simpson lied. I thought the most powerful argument that Petrocelli made in his rebuttal was concerning the attempt by Simpson's lawyers to trash the reputation of Ron Goldman. If Simpson was truly innocent, why would he try to trash and debase the memory of Ron Goldman? According to Simpson's theory, Ron Goldman died fighting to save the life of the mother of Simpson's children! In fact, if there really someone else who did the murder, then Goldman's heroics might've prevented the killer from going into the home and murdering Simpson's children. But instead Simpson's lawyers ended up mocking Ron Goldman. Only a guilty man does that.

A thorough and engrossing look at the Simpson Civil suit

I found Petrocelli's book utterly engrossing. I admit now that I was a Simpson trial junkie. Perhaps because of my disgust with the first outcome, it was with excitement that I picked up Petrocelli's book; I was not disappointed. Petrocelli's finest accomplishment with this book is showing how utterly shameless Simpson is. Petrocelli does not hide his incredulity, as well he shouldn't. Using sworn documents and other statements and materials, Petrocelli shows step by step Simpson's repeated attempts to obfuscate, attenuate, and ameliorate. Petrocelli also succeeds in voicing the reader's thoughts, as when he makes comments on specific Simpson lies; he knows what the reader is thinking. If you read one more book on Simpson, make it this one. "After you read this Simpson bible, you must find him liable."

An outstanding perspective of legal management!

Was drawn to this book because I had seen Daniel Petrocelli on various talk shows. His explanation and legal rationale relative to the important legal and social issues of this case caught my attention. Prior to the publication of his book, I had not read any books relative to the O J case. Petrocelli provides the reader with a behind the scene view as to the strength of his leadership and managerial skills. He was faced with a huge task of evaluating the mountains of legal testimony and evidence from the original case. Where to start? Where would the money to put on a first class case come from? Who should be involved? He takes the reader on his personal journey from the early stages as to whether he should take the case,through his approach to key individuals in his law firm, the rationale he used for delegation, as well as expressing the personal doubts he encountered both prior to and during the case. Soon the reader feels his obsession, his passion and distaste for Simpson, but is still able to become focused enough to develop a very cogent legal strategy. The book certainly is a must reading for any law student because of its awareness in how important it is to have good case preparation. Such an approach may be taught in law school, but when done in an effective way as outlined by Petrocelli, it can be a realistic learning experience. It is even recommended reading for experienced trial lawyers who have an opportunity to reinforce what it takes to develop a thoroughness of legal preparation whenever they represent a client. Petrocelli provides a high quality sense of reality for legal scholars and practioners as to what clients should expect from a legal team in a high stakes winner take all game. The purchase of this book is worth the investment.

Not practical - very disappointing

I've read through this book and I can's say I'm any closer to understanding how to design a transformer than when I started. There are very view practical examples. The text is vague on nearly every subject it discusses. There is no discussion on how how to select a core size, or transformers for switching power supplies. There is a lot of discussion about things no-one cares about such as procurement practice, and quality assurance.

I bought this book hoping to get learn how to design a step up transformer ( a lower voltage to a higher one). The information in this book can be divided into two categories:
1) things you already know 2) things that you are not interested in
No attempt is made to present material in an intuitive format. Another weakness of the book is that several fromulas are presented with variables that are neither defined or explained. If you are interested in building you're own transformers don't waste your money on this book. The only value it has is as a reference for few formulas. There is little practical, useful information if you are looking to construct a specialty transformer for a design project.

The book seems somewhat out-dated and lacks a complete mathematical approach, however, is has been a very useful text as a companion to other texts that I have on this and related subjects. When I first perused the book I was dissapointed in the seemingly lack of mathematical analysis, but on closer examination and actual use of the book, I have found it to be quite useful and would recommend it to those who not particularly interested in a highly rigorous text.

EGBERT SCHUURMAN (born 1937) studied civil engineering at the Technical University of Delft and philosophy at the Free University in Amsterdam. He obtained his doctorate in 1972. In the same year he was appointed professor in Reformational Philosophy at the Technical University of Eindhoven. From 1983 to 1984, he was engaged in research and lecturing in the United States as part of an international research team on Responsible Technology. Since 1983, Dr. Schuurman has been a member of the Upper Chamber of the Dutch Parliament. In 1995, in Berkeley, California, he was granted a Templeton Award for his work as an educator in religion, science, and technology. Dr. Schuurman is the author of several books, including Perspectives on Technology and Culture, Technology in Christian Philosophical Perspective, Reflections on the technological Society, Faith and Hope in Technology, and Technological World Picture and an Ethics of Responsibility. Several of his books have been translated into Chinese, English, Korean, and Japanese.

Applied neuroscience minus the hype and fantasy

Well researched and clearly written by an expert. Provides a unique look into actual application of the latest findings in neuroscience without all the unrealistic hype and fantasy. Also, the best treatment of ethical considerations in neuroscience. Don't let the hokey name and cover illustration throw you off.

His book provides interesting insight into some of the government intelligence agency projects but mostly with a one-sided view

For someone who is a professor of Biomedical Ethics, written a book on Secret State Experiments on Humans, served as a senior staff member on two presidential ethics commissions, served as president of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities, I'm surprised that he believes "those who think they have been victimized by government mind control experiments are misguided". His book provides interesting insight into some of the government intelligence agency projects but mostly with a one-sided view on how useful the projects are with little consideration of potential ethical concerns or mention of previous human subject experimentation violations such as MKUltra.

I too recently took a ''neuro-ethics'' course with the author, and I wasn't required to purchase this book - I did so because the material in the course was utterly engrossing and I wanted more, more, more. This book did not disappoint. Open your eyes and mind, and start thinking more fully about where the world has been and where it is headed - something we all need to do. Highly recommended!

Great book

This is an excellent book for any engineer that is applying radial sealing technology.
The first week I received this manual I was able to apply much of what I read. The value of the data is priceless.
The design related information is accurate and well as the material selection criteria.
This book is also written very well, (considering the fact the most engineering manuals are hard to read).
You could use this book alone to design and develop a radial lip seal for any application.

If you are responsible for the design of face seals, there is no better resource that this. I found it to be rather expensive but well worth the money. I have been able to implement successful seal designs by using the approach and design equations that are presented in this reference.

It gives you some info of the districts, outskirts of the city, transport, attractions, etc. They have a map at the front and back of the book that made me realize that Zootopia is a Disneyland, what with all the boundaries of districts and a monorail going around the city. It's a city-sized Disneyland!

Personally, I was curious about how the city works exactly. One particular mystery I've been wondering is food. What exactly do predators eat since they can't eat their prey turned best friend? Well, the handbook certainly gives some examples, but leaves more to be desired.

There are some recurring establishments that I've noticed from the other books that are mentioned here such as Chez Cheez. And fleas are a serious health issue apparently.

Anyway, it's pretty useful reference material for people who want to make fanfics of this movie. And for this reason alone I give it 5-stars.

A book for kids that adults will enjoy.

I've read people giving this 3 stars because it's "light fare" and "more for kids than adults". Well of course it is! It's a 64 page paper-cover about an animated Disney movie! Want more technical stuff? Insight by the directors, producers, artists, etc? Buy The Art of Zootopia then!

I'll say this book is written as an official guide to the city of zootopia (more like a draft, because it has annotations on differents ads and images still to be sent to the publisher), highlighting the main attractions of the different suburbs we see in the movie, some interviews with notable citizens of zootopia and places to see or visit while on the city.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know little bits of trivia about zootopia or wants to learn about how the city of zootopia works. Kids will be entertained with the funny ads and bits of information about the city, while adults can appreciate the original art and the in-depth info about the characters.

Great for Fans!

My 9 year old daughter is a HUGE Zootopia fan - and I was so excited to get this book for her! It was everything she'd hoped for - and FAR less expensive than the coffee table book (which I might end up buying her for Christmas...)
