House in Motion, Second Edition explores the genre of portable, transportable, demountable and temporary architecture. Moving buildings are among the earliest artifacts created by man, and yet they have a persisting relevance that enables a Bedouin tent to exist in the same world as a 90,000-ton aircraft carrier.

In this revised edition of his definitive study, Robert Kronenbourg examines the development of the moveable building from prehistory to the present day, including a entirely new chapter on the influence that new technologies have on the subject. From familiar vernacular models such as the tent, mobile home and houseboat, to developments in military and construction engineering, all aspects of portable architecture are considered.

Kronenbourg makes comparisons between current, commercially available products and the work of innovative designers. He explores the philosophical and technological issues raised by contemporary, experimental and futuristic prototypes, and examines the suitability to purpose of portable building solutions in shelter after disaster situations.

A greater undestanding of the nature of transitory architecture could result in a new, ecologically aware design strategy which prioritises buildings that 'tread lightly on the earth' and still convey the sense of identity and community necessary for an established responsible society. ROBERT KRONENBURG PhD RIBA is an architect and senior lecturer at the School of Architecture and Building Engineering at the University of Liverpool. His books include Portable Architecture (Architectural Press, 2000), FTL:Softness, Movement and Light (Wiley-Academy, 1997), and Spirit of the Machine (Wiley-Academy, 2001). His research has been supported by the Building Centre Trust, London, the Graham Foundation, Chicago, the US Fulbright Commission, St. John's College, Oxford University, and the Leverhulme Trust. He curated Portable Architecture at the Royal Institute of British Architects, London and the touring event Spontaneous Construction, and is a curatorial advisor on the Vitra Museum's international exhibition Living in Motion

Broaden your perspective on India's innovation eco-system

The author of this book, Prof. Rishikesha Krishnan, is my friend and collaborator. Hence, this review will have an obvious bias. I have tried my best to be objective.

A bit about my background: I am self-employed and help organizations to become more innovative and do this for living. Books I read fall into three categories: entertainment (Da Vinci Code), reading for new insights (The Art of innovation) and textbook like reading - try to internalize the framework (Made to stick). This book "From jugaad to systematic to systematic innovation" fell into the second category.

The central question this book tries to address is as follows: Why is it that India is unable to be the source of major innovations on a sustained basis even through it has some of the most individually talented people in the world? In other words: Why is India an "uneven" innovator? It addresses this question in 3 steps: First, it tries to answer: "What influences industrial innovation?" where it presents frameworks for national innovation systems perspective, with its elements such as public and private firms, research labs and government policies such as foreign direct investment. Second, the author makes an assessment of "Where do we stand?" Various indicators from patent numbers to Georgia Tech's High Tech Indicators are used to make a case that India doesn't rank high on most of the metrics. And third, "Why has India failed to achieve its innovation potential?" This is where the "history" sets in to show how innovation capabilities both evolved and got constrained by social, political and economic processes. At the end the author gives a seven-point agenda for going from jugaad to systematic innovation.

Innovation systems approach sees firms as the locus of innovation. And firm's propensity to innovate depends upon 3 factors: (1) Incentive: Is there enough competition? (2) Inputs: talent, academic & research institutes supplying expertise & ideas and risk capital. (3) Capacity: motivation and inputs are necessary but not sufficient. The firm should be able to convert the ideas into marketable products and services. The author shows that while liberalization has brought a change in the first factor (incentive), the eco-system in India lacks both inputs and capacity.

I found following 3 things very useful:

1. National innovation systems perspective: Before reading this book, I didn't know how academicians have looked at national innovation ecosystem. The book presents four frameworks: one by Nelson, second by OECD study, third by Mathews and the fourth by Forbes and Wield. I see myself referring back to these.

2. Historical perspective: This book made me look into the history of technology and innovation management in India. The case on the rise and fall of CDoT was particularly an eye-opener.

3. Evolution of innovation in other countries: As I read this book, I got interested in understanding how innovation capabilities developed in other countries - especially South Korea, Taiwan and Israel. Subsequently, I got a chance to read "Start-up nation" by Senor and Singer which I enjoyed.

If you are game for some reflection on innovation scene in India, I strongly recommend this book.

Innovation has no socio-economic boundary

Innovation has no social boundary. These days a number of farmers, agricultural workers, craftsmen and young citizens in the rural areas in a developing country like India are emerging as enthusiast innovators. Some of the factors, as identified by the STS researchers for grassroots innovation, are primarily affordability and sustainability, while grassroots innovations are acknowledged as community-led frugal solutions to the local problems.
This book explores grassroots innovation movements in India and their implications in formal systematic innovation.

The first four of his five sermons included here, which have been published in English (Our Sunday Visitor, 1986), originated as 1981 Lenten homilies given in Munich's cathedral to counter a modern abandonment of creation doctrine based on scripture. A fifth homily by a different translator augments this edition. Ratzinger's sermons treat God the creator, biblical creation accounts, creation of human beings, sin and salvation, and the consequences of faith on creation. The readable but challenging meditations attempt a balance between extremes of fundamentalism and rationalism and emphasize a unity between the Old and New Testaments. Great intro 2 theological implications from Creation Account

This book is a collection of four homilies that were given by Cardinal Ratzinger on the creation account in Genesis. It gives a Catholic understanding of the theological implications from the teachings of creation found in Genesis. Cardinal Ratzinger starts with the importance about the necessity of properly understanding this, and the problems with ignoring the creation account. He shows how you cannot answer the question of "What we do" without first addressing the question of "What we are".
From this he proceeds to give a brilliant understanding of what it means to be a human being. What kind of creature we are and our place in creation. His first homily is based on "God the Creator" and its relevance to the differences between our view of God creating the world and other religions views. He then goes to his second homily "The Meaning of the Biblical Account", which gives a more balanced understanding of creation, and its cultural significance at the time. His third homily, "The creation of the Human Being" gives an understanding of what it means to be human and our place and reasons for being. His fourth, and final homily, "Sin and Salvation" gives and understanding of our nature, and our responsibility in our decision-making. Also touches upon the resurrection and the way it addresses our innate struggles. The book ends with an appendix that briefly goes into certain other semi related topics.
It should also be mentioned that Cardinal Ratzinger addresses the scientific implications of the creation account very little in this book. He addresses the problem in proving that the creation account was never meant to be a strict fundamentalist scientific view of how the world was created. But an actual unfolding, with different aspects given all throughout the bible, that directly addresses certain misunderstandings in other religions at the time and, at the same time, giving us a deeper understanding of our place in the world. He also shows how each account, cannot be separated from the others. And only in looking at the bible as a whole can you get the real meaning of the creation account. With that said, there are certain scientific dimensions that are involved in the creation accounts that cannot be denied. Cardinal Ratzinger briefly addresses this. But does not get into too much detail.
Overall, this book is a short, easy to read, explanation of the Christian understanding of what it means to be a human being, our nature, and our limitations. It gives an often misunderstood understanding of the creation account. This book is highly recommended for anybody who is trying to understand the Christian view of man, and the biblical basis for that.

Authoritative Interpretation

It is to be noted that from 1981 to 2005, Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger held a second job in the Vatican. In addition to being Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, he also served as President of the Pontifical Biblical Commission. The latter board provides oversight for the study of Sacred Scripture within the Catholic church.

This set of homilies on the first chapters of Genesis, in continuity with the great encyclical Humani Generis by Pope Pius XII, sets forth the Catholic approach, which is neither fundamentalist nor rationalist. For example, how long is one of these days of creation? The fundamentalist says 24 hours or you're damned. The rationalist says billions of years or you're a fool. The Catholic says: Just as long as God wanted it to be, and not a minute more or less. How does the timeless God experience time? Not as we do. The Second Letter of Peter says "A thousand years are in your sight as a day, and a day as a thousand years." (But this gives us two yardsticks, which are not the same.) Since only God witnessed the first five days of creation, they were divine days, not human days.

We may hear more on this subject from Pope Benedict XVI in an encyclical in coming months. Stay tuned.

Insightful Expression of Catholic Beliefs

In this collection consists of five separate homilies of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger on the following themes: the Creator, the Biblical account of creation, the creation of man, original sin and faith in creation. This very theological work concisely lays out the Catholic understanding of creation.

Cardinal Ratzinger begins by explain how the passages in Genesis about creation should be interpreted, explaining that they cannot be read in isolation from the New Testament. They must be read with Christ.

He goes on to look at the symbolism found in Genesis, especially the symbolism of the Sabbath day with its meaning as a day of worship. He then goes on to assess human responsibilities to look after the world.

The third homily looks specifically to creation of the human being, arguing that all humans have their origins in the same earth and are all created in God's image and likeness. He argues that Genesis explains that there is one humanity and that through Christ humans can become the children of God. Cardinal Ratzinger then goes on to argue that the Biblical accounts explain what human beings are, whereas the theory of evolution explains how human beings developed. He affirms that the natural sciences explain how the divine project of creation grows.

The fourth homily addresses the issues of sin, human freedom and original sin, explaining that humans cannot save themselves and that Christ instead has redeemed humanity.

The concluding chapter talks about the reception of the idea of creation in modern times. He looks at the suppression of faith, naturalism, nihilism, and gnosticism. He finishes by arguing that the question of creation does matter and that creation is an inseparable part of Redemption.

It is a classical good book to Operative Dentistry. Although Professor Pickard passed away, his book can keep "Eigth Edition". I just read the first part of it only but I will keep on finishing it. I'm just the Ninth edition. Much more concise! It's just irresistable to have a look of it and collect of it. Waiting for the new edition, too.
