In an age where mathematics textbooks seem to only grow more and more convoluted in their approach to and explanation of foundational topics such as Linear Algebra, Dr. Grinfeld's writing is a breath of fresh air.

I had the privilege of learning Linear Algebra from Dr. Grinfeld firsthand. His love for the subject is readily apparent in his quality of teaching as well as his ability to effectively communicate a deep understanding of Linear Algebra in an accessible manner.

I am pleased to discover that the same quality of teaching found in his classroom can be obtained in this book (at a much more competitive price too!). For anyone who cares about knowing a subject through and through or simply desires a deeper grasp of Linear Algebra I can offer no better place to turn to than this book. Read it to learn. Read it to test your understanding. Read it to refresh your understanding.

Useful tool for anyone in a math class involving linear algebra

The guide is short and to the point, and reviews in an intuitive way the concepts of linear algebra. Since it's such a short read and provides examples that allow the student to develop an instinctive sense for solving common problems, I would recommend it as a companion to any new student in a linear algebra class, as well as anyone looking to review the basics of the subject.

The exercises are simple enough to teach the basics, and the more challenging problems and explanations are thought provoking enough to develop mastery of the subject - adequately preparing the reader for tough extra credit problems to be faced on an exam.

The story that Professors Hamblin and Seely tell is true.

William Hamblin and David Seely both served LDS missions in Italy. They shared a Latin class at BYU. They both earned doctorates from the University of Michigan--Hamblin in the history of the pre-modern Middle East and Seely in biblical studies. On one occasion, they were standing in a Borders bookstore in Ann Arbor together, admiring something from the London publisher Thames and Hudson, and they decided that they would like to do a book with that firm someday.

So, in 2007, they did. And their book has since been translated into French, German, Spanish, Dutch, Norwegian, and Romanian.

Solomon's Temple: Myth and History is a beautifully illustrated book, not only about the Bronze Age background and historical reality of ancient "Israelite Temples," the title of the first of the volume's five chapters, but also about the afterlife of those temples, and particularly that of Solomon, in subsequent Jewish tradition, Christian thought, and Islamic lore. It concludes with a chapter entitled "Modern Conceptions of Solomon's Temple" that ranges from the Reformation to Freemasonry, from Renaissance painting to the politics of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem (where both authors have lived for extended periods).

Latter-day Saint readers will note with interest the authors' dedication: "For Hugh W. Nibley, who showed the way." Although the book is by no means overtly (or even covertly) designed to preach Mormonism (though "Mormon Temples" are treated on pp. 190-93), the inspiration of Nibley's passion for the temple is apparent on every page of it for those familiar with his work. The Temple of Solomon, believed to be a place of communion between God and humanity, has been a continuing focus of profound reverence for more than three thousand years. Although its last successor was destroyed very nearly two millennia ago, it lives on. Justinian's great sixth-century church of Hagia Sophia, in Istanbul (the former imperial Byzantine capital, Constantinople), was conceived as, in some sense, a re-creation of the ancient Israelite shrine. When it was finished, according to the historian Procopius, Justinian exclaimed, "Solomon, I have outdone thee!" Likewise, Jerusalem's seventh-century Islamic Dome of the Rock and the later headquarters of the Templar knights and many medieval Christian cathedrals were regarded by their builders as restorations of King Solomon's great structure.

For Jews, in fact, after the final destruction of the temple by the Romans in AD 70, the Bible itself became a metaphorical "Temple of the Lord." Its traditional three sections were said to coincide with the tripartite structure of Moses's wilderness tabernacle: the Writings were the outer court, the Prophets were the holy place, and the Law was the holy of holies. The Mishnah and the Talmud contain entire tractates on the measurements of the temple and its rituals, and about their meaning and function even in post-temple Judaism, and these texts are at the core of rabbinic studies still today. Moreover, many of the biblical psalms are temple hymns.

So great was Solomon's temple that many later legends ascribed that achievement to supernatural help, and many magicians sought to harness that power for their own ends. (The six-pointed shield or star of David seems to have originated in a magician's hexagram called the Shield of Solomon.) And this temple has persisted in the visions of Jewish, Christian, and Muslim mystics, who have seen a celestial temple that mirrors the temple on earth, a place where divine secrets are revealed to humankind.

Solomon's Temple: Myth and History tells a story that is every bit as fascinating, every bit as exotic and far ranging, as the tales spun by Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code and Steven Spielberg's Raiders of the Lost Ark. It has one advantage over those, however, that will appeal to some: the story that Professors Hamblin and Seely tell is true.

If you are an history buff, this is sure to get your adrenaline pumping! The quality of the book is high--thick glossy pages and beautiful photos--nice binding. The info is thorough and an academics dream...I almost cried.

About the Author

Bob Stremba, EdD, is associate professor and director of adventure education in the department of exercise science at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, where he teaches a wide range of adventure courses both in the field and in the classroom. As a seasonal instructor and course director for Outward Bound Wilderness, Stremba enjoys the opportunity to put the theories of adventure education into action.

Stremba has developed adventure education programs at three universities in the United States and has taught conceptual, theoretical, and technical adventure skills to undergraduates for nearly 10 years, using experiential and hands-on activities to illustrate concepts and theories in his classroom teaching. He has presented his work on experiential education for adventure theory at several conferences for the Association for Experiential Education (AEE) and the Wilderness Education Association.

A member of AEE, Stremba also serves on the board of directors and as a member of four AEE international and regional conference committees, and he is a former member of the AEE's Accredidation Council. He is also a member of the Wilderness Education Association.

Stremba resides in Durango and enjoys backpacking, moutain biking, and snow skiing.

Christian A. Bisson, EdD, is an associate professor of adventure education at Plymouth State University in Plymouth, New Hampshire.

Bisson earned his doctorate in physical education with a specialization in pedagogy. He is a former editor of the CORE Newsletter for the Association for Experiential Education (AEE) Schools and Colleges professional group and served on the Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) Clearinghouse on Rural and Small Schools. Bisson was also an Outdoor Education editorial board member from 2001 to 2004.

In 2000, Bisson received an Outstanding Teaching Award from Northland College. He also received the Outstanding Experiential Teacher of the Year Award from the Association for Experiential Education in 1997.

He and his wife, Julie, reside in Plymouth. In his free time, Bisson enjoys parenting and, when possible, woodworking, hiking, and paddling.

A textbook for instructor trainers / teacher educators that want to teach a college level introductory adventure education theory course. It is not an instructional how to for undergraduate students and limited as such. Otherwise a nice collection of experiential lesson plans for ITs and TEs to consider.

Who is this for?

That might sound like a ridiculous question given the title of the book, but if this book is solely for teachers of Adventure Ed, then I can't help but feel that it has been written for a very small niche that shouldn't need a book like this written for them.

If you are a student of Adventure Education Theory you'd be much better off buying Effective Leadership in Adventure Programming - 2nd Edition A vastly more coherent summary of the skills, knowledge and attributes required of practitioners.

If you are a teacher of Adventure Education Theory then I'd hope you would have the experience, creativity and resourcefulness to devise lessons that better fit the needs of your own students and your own teaching style rather than rely on an "off the shelf" teaching aid.

If the book had been presented like a revision or update for "Effective Leadership..." I feel more space could have been given over to the great content it does have, on Philosophy for example, rather than to the way in which that could be taught according to somebody else's design.
