Saved my Trip!
By 2DogMom
One of the few, if only, books about Azores. Without it, I could not have planned an itinerary. The usual travel books about Portugal give only a few pages to the subject. Even online information is sparse. This book is detailed about every aspect of the islands and it is one of my greatest finds recently.

Hardly different from the previous edition
By C.A.
In a field that is hardly crowded, this is probably still one of the best - if not the best - guidebooks of the Azores. However, it was very disappointing to see that the 5th edition is hardly different from the 4th (2010) except for photographs. For example, major highways were built on Sao Miguel since then - a fact that is vitally important to those who venture beyond Ponta Delgada, yet there's no mention of this in the 5th edition, even though they do appear on the map. The coverage of hotels and especially restaurants outside of Ponta Delgada is very skimpy: not one eatery is mentioned in Furnas, among others. So maybe the author doesn't care for them, but you gotta eat somewhere - and negative information is still information. Neither is there any mention of the very limited yet inexpensive hot lunches that can be had in larger supermarkets when pressed for time - or at least that was our experience on Pico. Many descriptions of towns, museums, and sights have moved from the 4th edition verbatim, which makes one wonder how current they are. The exact locations of sights described are often missing, and the listing of museums separately from the towns where they are located doesn't help either. So even though the book does a great job of advertising the Azores, its practical usefulness is wanting, and if you own the previous edition, don't bother with this one. Looks like the publisher jumped the gun this time.

Azores travel book
By serpak
This book was very helpful for my week long trip to the Azores. There are useful appendices in the back detailing flora and fish native to the islands (this helped alot ordering fish in the restaurants!) There is also a good section on photography which I did not expect. Although, I am more accustomed to the format of lonely planet guides this one proved to be organized ok. Nice sections on walks and hiking trails. A bit lacking in the transport department but don't worry, the islands are small and cabs are affordable and easy to find.
