If your default "easy" fish recipe is getting old, check out this book!

Sometimes "simple" and "easy" signal a group of recipes that have come together in a book for the sake of creating a "simple and easy" money-maker. Not so with this book from the UK that was published last year and was republished as a Kindle version a few months ago. This Mitch Tonks really likes to eat and cook fish. He talks and cooks fish on TV and has three restaurants in the UK. Some call him a "fish fanatic", plus he focuses on sustainable fish. His love for seafood and his expertise in cooking it, is evident in this book. He has provided us with some unique, (some not so unique, but still worthy of being kept in the same collection), and easy-to-turn-to recipes that will steer you away from your current default recipes.

Here is why this book works for me: I get off work, stop by my favorite oriental market on my way home, and pick up a whole fish to throw on the grill when I get home. You can't get any simpler: It is a very quick cooking process and I don't get my stove dirty or heat up the kitchen. Yet, I found myself faltering as my fishmonger politely waits for me to choose a fresh fish from the case. Are we getting tired of the same old flavors? Well, if I'm actually asking myself that question, I guess I am...

I needed some new ideas and tricks in my fish-cooking arsenal. Looks like I found this book just in time!

I mention that I prefer to grill whole fish, but I don't want you to get the impression that there is nothing else of interest in this book. The variety of interesting sauces alone is enough to provide great value to this book. As the product page describes, the book covers all the cooking techniques and the "grill" recipes also work in your oven's broiler. If you like your fish filleted, be aware that most of the recipes in this book are for filleted fish. There are some shellfish recipes too, plus octopus. Tonks has also included some cured fish recipes, too.

I dinged this cookbook one star for several reasons: I think the layout is a bit of a hodge-podge. Also, I don't think there is enough information provided on the fish itself: What to look for, how to clean them, ideal size, descriptions, flavor, texture of the meat, etc. Plus, for instance: How big are the sardines? What is marsh samphire? What is gurnard? Besides that, the editors seem to have forgotten that this book is being offered for sale in the US: British norms and names need some interpretation when the cookbook is being touted in the States. None of this really bothers me--I've been a fisherman since I was five, and I've been cooking fish for a long time and I like to do internet searches--but these things might cause some frown lines on the brow of someone less experienced. I must suggest that some of this information might be available in his earlier books: Fishworks Seafood Cafe Cookbook and The Fishmonger's Cookbook. I don't know, because I've not looked at them yet. (But I will soon as they are in shipment to me: They are both available through Amazon and you can pick up a used copy for a song.)

YOU CAN STOP READING HERE, as I think I've provided you with enough info to make a decision on this book. But, if you need more, keep on reading; I've listed my favorite recipes and some others that are on my bucket list:

--I grow sorrel in my yard, so I really like the filleted red snapper (or bream) with sorrel, sour cream and cumin "under the grill", (which is under a broiler). It works with spinach, too.
--A salad of grilled small red snapper (or mullet), with cucumber, radishes, cilantro and scallions tossed with a lime dressing;
--There is a simply grilled mackerel served with a food processor concoction of a whole lemon, sugar, pepper, ginger and basil, or with a spiced salt (with star anise and sichuan peppercorns).
--Or grilled sardines with fennel seeds.
--There is a very interesting "barbecue sauce" for octopus: It contains, among other ingredients: Fennel, Dijon, vinegar, ras el hanout, soy sauce, garlic, honey, lemon and chile powder.
--Several squid recipes, with a variety of cooking techniques and flavor combinations.
--I have sage in my garden all year long, so I've grown attached to red snapper (or mullet) with a sauce of fresh sage, anchovy, wine and bread crumbs.
--A combination of ingredients that I've used before--tomato and orange juice--plus other ingredients, combine to make a ragu with a firm white fish and served over penne.
--Sea bass with clams and sherry;
--Skate (or ray) with a salsa of herbs, capers, breadcrumbs and grated hard-boiled egg;
--Roast sea bass with potatoes, olives, herbs and orange and lemon juice;
--Maybe my favorite way with monkfish: A whole tail on the bone, roasted with loads of garlic, sage leaves, rosemary, stock--finished with a bit of heavy cream.
--Gurnard (I sub catfish) braised with celery, onion and hard cider.

One hundred recipes (and this includes some simple sauces and dressings, plus aioli and tartare sauce and such) is not all that many recipes, but I found this to be a very handy book and I've turned to it often as I investigated this book.

*I received a temporary download of Fish Easy from the publisher (through NetGalley). I will loose the download soon and I like it well enough to have put the book in my Amazon shopping cart along with his two old books. As to the Kindle edition, I can't help you there, except to say the download I received is the same as what you see in the "Look Inside" feature on this product page. I was not really impressed with it, but it may be an advanced copy (not finished or fully edited) that we are looking at.

About the Author
Bert J. M. de Vries is co-founder and member of the Institute for Energy and Environment (IVEM) at the University of Groningen in The Netherlands, where he received his Ph.D. on sustainable resource use. Since 1990 he has been a senior scientist at the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL, formerly MNP and RIVM). He has been actively involved in modelling and scenario construction for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Since 2003 he has also been a Professor of Global Change and Energy at Utrecht University in The Netherlands. His research expertise and publications are in resource and energy analysis, modelling and policy; climate and global change modelling; and complex systems modelling for sustainable development. He has co-edited several books, including Perspectives on Global Change: The TARGETS Approach (1997, Cambridge University Press) and Mappae Mundi: Humans and their Habitats in a Long-Term Socio-Ecological Perspective (2002, Amsterdam University Press).

Deep, comprehensive, and multifacetic guide to sustainability

This is a very comprehensive, well written and exhaustively researched book on the scientific basis of sustainability. The material is extremely well presented and content is superbly rich and deep. The book offers a very wide view where, besides the excellent mandatory chapters on system dynamics, epistemology, energy, history, agriculture, etc, it also offers a unique summary of each chapter from the point of view of four "worldviews", cleverly chosen models to represent the way a large portion of people think. The wonderful manner in which the author managed to present the links between all physical, economical and industrial concerns to cultural theory, and the human dimensions of the problem of sustainability, is sufficient reason to get this book. It really improved the way I think about the subject. The book also contains extensive references to articles, books, databases and websites.

There are a few glitches though, all forgivable but worth a thought for a next edition. Too many typos appear every now and then, possibly more often than I would like to see in a Cambridge book. In table 7.4. CCS (carbon capture and storage) is mentioned but nowhere introduced before, nor the acronym spelled. Also the choice of color schemes in the the color plates is often unhappy, as represented by the world soil map in which the tones are so similar that the map is for all purposes useless.

All in all a 5 star book. Indispensable for students and practitioners of sustainability.

Many people agree that sustainability science is a legitimate field of research, teaching, and practice, and that it is interdisciplinary and requires system thinking. Much less agreement exists regarding what body of knowledge and what analytical tools constitute it. The new book by Bert de Vries from Cambridge University Press is a grand effort to define what sustainability science is.
The book has evolved from a course de Vries has taught for many years at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. The author is a physicist by training and a highly accomplished expert in dynamic modeling of complex systems. The book has two organizing themes: One is complex system dynamic modeling, which is used throughout the text, both quantitatively and qualitatively (the latter as a conceptualizing device). The second is the assumption that people have very different understandings of sustainability and quality of life, and that this plurality of views needs to be acknowledged in developing sustainability policies. This is a sophisticated text for a demanding course aimed at advanced undergraduate and graduate students who have already mastered basic natural sciences and quantitative skills.
Having a technical model as an organizing theme of a textbook is risky. It can lead one to see the society as basically a complicated machine – an assembly of known causal relationships and scientifically-determined parameters -- moving according to a set of rules and producing predictable outcomes. De Vries avoids this trap by giving a lot of space to the historical accounts of human interactions with nature, by including in each chapter interesting empirical stories, and by emphasizing values and worldviews. Specifically, following the introduction to systems dynamics in chapter 2, chapters 3 and 4 and 5, respectively, focus on the relationship between humans and nature in past civilizations, in the past three hundred years, and in the modern era of environmental movements and sustainable development debate. Chapter 6 draws on the cultural theory to put the scientific analysis in the context of human values and worldviews and to support the book’s opening statement that the concept of sustainable development is essentially “about aspirations of human beings for a good quality of life while respecting the plurality of worldviews.”
Chapters 7 through 13 are the most technical and data driven. In these, the book covers specific domains that are central to the conversation about sustainability: agro-food system, human population dynamics, renewable water resources, and non-renewable resources (energy and minerals). In each case dynamic modeling is a central analytic tool. At the end of each chapter students are presented with what amounts to a jumpstart for a classroom debate about policy alternatives. Several normative statements are made and each is followed with four very different responses by hypothetical individuals, each representing a contrasting worldview. Although these opening statements and responses do not directly follow from the main body of each chapter (which is rather technical) they nevertheless open the door for individual instructors to bridge the scientific analysis with a conversation about policy alternatives.
This is a beautiful and carefully edited book: the graphics are superb and the langue is free of jargon. Each chapter ends with an extensive list of additional readings and websites.
Students completing this course will have analytical tools and fundamental knowledge to understand complex interactions between the natural and social systems, and will be sensitized to the importance of values in policy process. But when I tried to put myself in the place of a graduate who is eager to put this knowledge into action I realized that something is missing. Suppose that this student wants to understand the root causes of our current overuse of the earth’s life support systems? What if she wants to understand why, with so much scientific knowledge and such urgency, governments have taken so little action? Why have the traditional policy approaches—regulations, economic incentives, information disclosure—been used so sparingly, and when they have been used, why have they produced so little progress? What are the main obstacles to a sustainability transition in individual countries and globally? What if, after graduating, this student wants to focus her just-acquired knowledge toward weakening these obstacles? What can he do in the private and professional life to affect future change?
To help students confront these core questions the book would need to be somewhat more normative. For example, economic growth – in my view a principal force behind the huge stress on Earth’s life supporting systems – is discussed in one of the two final chapters (entitled “Toward Sustainable Economy?”) as a theory, not as an ideology (as currently practiced it is more the latter than the former). The book, and the students, would greatly benefit from being exposed to a critique of economic growth from the perspectives of power relations, institutions, consumerism culture and geopolitics. Another conspicuously missing piece is a discussion of renewable energy technologies from through the lenses of science, institutions and human behavior. Topics such as energy returns on energy investments (EROI), rebound effect, and other strengths and limitations of technological interventions in essentially economic problems, would be part of such an additional chapter.
Perhaps the next edition of this excellent but still incomplete textbook will address these topics.

Fairy Tales, Linguistics, and Feminism

Recently, Catherine Orenstein authored a book about Little Red Riding Hood through the ages, titled 'Little Red Riding Hood Uncloaked', studying the tale's influence in popular culture and vice versa. The book made great armchair reading for anyone slightly interested in the subject.
Now Alessandro Levorato has published a more scholarly study of the famous fairy tale in 12 versions published over the past 300 years. She takes the seldom used linguistics approach to studying the tale, breaking down each tale into word choices and meanings, as well as other nuances of grammar and language usage. This is not easy reading, but it is meaningful. Levorato's study is divided into six main sections with a final section summarizing the conclusions drawn from the entire study. The texts of the twelve versions show how society has changed, especially concerning gender issues. The book is recommended for anyone interested in any of the primary subjects of fairy tales, linguistics, or gender issues in literature. It should be made available in any reputable university library, too.

Great book about guitar pedals!

The most expensive and hardened toilet paper I have ever bought.

Hi everyone and prepare yourselves for sad news about these 332 sheets of paper pasted togher...
I'm not calling it a book, even if this item is sold in cathegory "books".

Do not be mislead by the number of pages (334!), the same amount of information could have been well set on 100 pages. The author just prefers to leave about 50% of every page empty. Add to this a completely awful editorial layout and poor quality black and white photos. Still if you are not confused by the mentioned above info and want to use this "book" to modify pedals you'd better get yourself a big magnifying glass because all the electric diagrams are barely traceable and every simgle one seems to be a reprint of some bad qality bleached photocopy of a scheme which in its turn had been printed by an old dot-matrix printer, and with all this quality the author had the conscience to downscale every scheme to fit a single page. Could you imagine anything worse?
Alas, Brian is the man who can make things even worse yet: some of electric diagrams are in freehand which shows first of all that he author doesn't descend on using a ruler and doesn't care in general to make the lines right and straight and the overall scheme inviting to the eye... Who needs computer graphics these days when there is a pen and trembly hand?!

The text itself is very jerky: first the author tries to make an introduction of electric components rudimentals but in a very hurried and patchy manner, then for some reason he gives a detailed description of what electronic parts could be found in this or that internet shop (a small embedded advertising?) and then he finally goes to the description of guitar pedal mods.
A small surprise: there is NO general info about modifying, there is just a collection of mods to some particular pedals which reader could even not have. No referencies to the mods' authors, but sometimes the author gets honest in his own way and writes laconically "found on web".

Conclusion: we all want to earn money, Brian Wampler is not an exception. He piled together some guitar pedal mod recipes found on web (a process that could take some time indeed), retrenched editing expenses by not having any layout designer at all, inflated the book's volume for a better presentability by adding as much useless space as he was able to (things that could happen innocent of wrong intention when your print your book using some simple text editors not suitable for book editing), and then Brian desided to sell this all for a price that is much higher in comparison with many other books of considerably better quality sold on Amazon.

Dear Brian, no hard feelings, but this was the most expensive and hardened toilet paper I have ever bought.

Dear guitar pedals' mod fans, you'd better spend some time on the Internet and you'll find much more info and for free!

PS I wanted to send it back for refund, but the very delivery of it from Russia costs about 80% of the book's price (yeah, that is what we have about regular post service prices here), so this review is the only way I can renumerate the author with.

From Someone Who Actually Bought the Book and Used the Information for Mods and a Build!!

Yes you can search on the internet for pedal mods- which I did. And find material to modify your pedal. But is the information accurate? If it's not - you have a problem. Your pedal will sound like crap or better yet it won't work at all.
You can take it apart and figure out what you have to do from A to Z and by the time you do that you can waste hours. And no it doesn't cost money - but it cost valuable time.

Or --- you can buy this WELL, RESEARCHED, AND ORGANIZED book and do it right the first time.

I'd rather buy the book - which I did. And everything is laid out in simple layman's terms on EXACTLY what to do from start to finish to modify your pedal. And my DS-1 sounds GREAT!

Brian mentions in the book HIS SOURCES if he has used other people's ideas and gives their name (if an individualand/or company of the source) and then explains what he did differently to come up with his particular modified sounding pedal. I was impressed that he would do this which conveys to me that he is a very upright and honest man.

His book is well laid out, with pictures that are very helpful which show where to place the new component for the mod, and organized. If you are a beginner or experienced with a degree I see a purpose for both with Brian's book.

I am a guitar player and have personally talked with Brain on the phone, ordered his book's AND have had excellent and fast service each time I dealt with him.

The negative reviews on here I doubt they have bought the book and have no idea what they are talking about, and obviously, neither do they.

Written by a guitar player who has modded one of my own pedals using Brain's book and built and designed my own unique sounding boutique pedal - again using Brian's book.

Connecting ...

I used to be a fan of the self-help books, all the way from Norman Vincent Peale to Dale Csrnegie to Anthony Robbins. The point of all of the reading was to just learn about living life at a higher frequency. But I started to move away from these because they made things look so very easy, to the point where I think they are almost irrelevant to the real world.

I was brought to this book through Seth Godin's Blog. It was an excellent read to me because it seemed to be a very honest and realistic discourse. The points of inspiration in this book are not Pollyanna-ish in the least. Sivers made errors, retreated, emerged, retreated again and then emerged again. Ups and downs. No smooth path. And he relates it very clearly.

I have built a successful business over the past 7 years but I have not enjoyed the ride. I am always looking to the end. But now that things are much better, I look back and see that I could have really enjoyed the process much more, and really it is the process that is the juice for me.

Sivers distills this very very well in writing about his experiences. Reading this has shaken me up tonight and brought to the forefront of my mind thoughts that I need to make some serious changes finally that will make me happier and my business more successful.

Thank you Derek Sivers for this book!

A nice distillation of a number of his blog posts into a single coherent narrative. Here were a couple of pieces of advice I found very helpful:

"Success comes from persistently improving and inventing, not from persistently doing what's not working."
"For an idea to get big it has to be useful and being useful does not need funding. Start now with a humble prototype of your big vision and you will be in the game."
"Make every decision--whether to expand the business, raise money, promote someone--according to what's best for your customers."

In some ways he built CD Baby while he was on his way to somewhere else. The first part of the book is a portrait of an artist as a young entrepreneur. Sivers' fundamental goal--as he states repeatedly--was not to become a successful entrepreneur. He wanted to be a singer in a rock and roll band and continued to take vocal lessons and play in bands. The very first iteration of CD Baby was just designed to sell his own band's CDs until other musicians asked him for help when learned he had solved the on-line distribution problem for himself.

He details how at various points he had unwittingly given his father 90% of the company for a token amount of money, he had delegated so much authority to his employees that they designed a profit sharing plan that allocated all of the profits to their profit sharing plan, and he didn't come to company headquarters much in later years.

I don't think this detracts from his observations about what was required to get CD Baby off the ground and up to a several million dollars a year run rate.

Very quick read with great customer fundamentals for entrepreneurs

I added this to my list of books to read after it being recommended by Shawn Blanc's monthly book club. Although new books go to the bottom of my list, this one looked like a quick read and given Easter Monday I was able to consume within the hour. What I liked about this book was Siver's open and honest approach to running a business. To him, it is about having fun, being happy and ultimately about the customer; money didn't play a role. It is certainty a healthy approach to have in a business however sometimes I think reality can bite into this approach given our fast paced world of technology and disruption. There were many anecdotes on both his successes and failures along with lessons we can all take from it. For example, the tried and true test of trusting and verifying, to delegate but not abdicate and to make every decision based on the impact to the customer. I don't believe that this approach to business works carte blanche in every industry and idea however there are some great fundamentals for any entrepreneur to take on board with a new venture.

Three key takeaways from the book:
1. Delegation is key in the business (especially when you grow), however, with delegation trust but verify. Furthermore delegation doesn't not mean abdication.
2. If you're not saying "Hell Yeah!" to an idea/approach etc. then say no!
3. Siver's Tao of Business: Care about your customers more than about yourself and you'll do well.

The topics are organized and presented in such a manner that they motivate and-challenge students to present technically and economically viable solutions to a wide variety of questions and problems, including product design. Since the publication of the third edition, there have been rapid and significant advances in various areas in manufacturing. The fourth edition of Manufacturing Processes for Engineering Materials, while continuing with balanced coverage of the relevant fundamentals, analytical approaches, and applications, reflects these new advances.

About the Author

Serope Kalpakjian taught and conducted research at the Illinois Institute of Technology for 38 years prior to his retirement in 2001 as professor emeritus of mechanical and materials engineering. After graduating from Robert College (high honors), Harvard University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he joined Cincinnati Milacron, where he was a research supervisor in advanced metal-forming processes. He is the author of numerous technical papers and several articles in handbooks and encyclopedias and has edited various conference proceedings. In addition, Professor Kalpakjian has served on the editorial bards of several journals and the Encyclopedia Americana and is the coauthor of Lubricants and Lubrication in Metalworking Operations. Both first editions of his textbooks, Manufacturing Processes for Engineering Materials and Manufacturing Engineering and Technology, have received the M. Eugene Merchant Manufacturing Textbook Award. He is a Life Fellow of the ASME, Fellow of the SME, Fellow and Life Member of ASM International, emeritus member of CIRP (International Institution for Production Engineering Research), and a founding member and past president of NAMRI/SME.

Among the awards Professor Kalpakjian has received are the Forging Industry Educational and Research Foundation Best Paper Award (1966), an Excellence in Teaching Award from IIT (1970), the Centennial Medallion from the ASME (1980), the International Education Award from the SME (1989), a Person of the Millennium Award from IIT (1999), and the Albert Easton White Distinguished Teacher Award from ASM International (2000). SME named the Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award after Professor Kalpakjian for the year 2002.

Steven R. Schmid is an associate professor with the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, University of Notre Dame, where he teaches and performs research in the general areas of manufacturing, machine design, and tribology. As the director of the Manufacturing Tribology Laboratory at the university, he oversees industry- and government-funded research on a variety of manufacturing topics, including tribological issues in rolling, forging and sheet-metal forming, polymer processing, medical-device design and manufacture, and nanomechanics.

He received the B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology (with honors) and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, both in mechanical engineering, from Northwestern University. He has received numerous awards, including the John T Parsons Award from the SME (2000), the Newkirk Award from the ASME (2000), and the Kaneb Center Teaching Award (2000). He is the recipient of a National Science Foundation CAREERS Award (1996) and an ALCOA Foundation Award (1994). Dr. Schmid is the author of over 50 technical papers; has edited three conference proceedings; has coauthored two books, Fundamentals o f Machine Elements and Manufacturing Engineering and Tecbnology; and has contributed two chapters to the CRC Handbook of Modern Tribology. He serves on the Tribology Division Executive Committee of the ASME, is an associate editor of the Journal o f Manufacturing Science and Engineering, and is a registered professional engineer and certified manufacturing engineer.

It can't be helped...

While this book is a fantastic overview of all things materials and their many, many, many different methods of processing, the text is beyond dry when it comes to actual readability. A few weeks could have been set aside in the writing process to make the text far less formulaic and repetitive than it is currently, but that effort was obviously not made.

However, its impossible to fault a textbook for being dry, and that's the only reason the single star was docked. The descriptions of the manufacturing processes and their applications, on the other hand, were detailed and helpful, and the book is recommended in that regard.

Sweet deal

The book did not go in as much detail as my professor did, but that really is not that big of a problem. I plan on keeping this book since it is relatively cheap (cost-wise) and has a ton of useful information in it. I would definitely recommend this book as a shelf reference book (not to carry around since it is extremely heavy). Great book....I highly recommend picking it up if you are a materials scientist/engineer or have any overlapping field of study that concerns processing at all (every physical product requires processing).

AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME

Being a junior mechanical engineering student, this text is whats used for the lecture. I use this textbook a lot and it is very helpful: all of the processes are well explained, why they should/should not be used in situations. Also this book makes a good effort to take the raw material and mix with facts beyond just when to use a process to get you actually interested in manufacturing. For example how investment casting (aka lost wax process) allowed people to create intricate statues.

Every week a quiz was given and studying for an hour with the book an notes helped me ace it every time.

**This semester I had expected that manufacturing would be the driest class; in fact this is one of the classes that I most enjoyed. I'm sure it was partly due because of my professor but this book certainly didn't hurt.

Met behulp van een ordeningsmodel en een meetprocedure worden de verschillende projectmanagementmethoden met elkaar vergeleken. Hierdoor wordt duidelijk hoe ze zich tot elkaar verhouden. Het afsluitende overzicht geeft aan welke projectmanagementmethode in welke context het best toepasbaar is.

De auteurs van dit boek hebben niet beoogd om een algemene projectmanagementstandaard neer te zetten.

Dit boek kwam tot stand door samenwerking van het IPMA-Nederland en Berenschot.

IPMA Nederland is de vakvereniging voor project-, programma- en portfoliomanagers. Het doel van IPMA-NL is het professionaliseren van het vakgebied projectmanagement. IPMA-NL heeft circa 2300 leden en is aangesloten bij de International Project Management Association (IPMA).

Berenschot is een onafhankelijk organisatieadviesbureau met circa vierhonderd medewerkers in de Benelux. Berenschot is partner in de E-I Consulting Group, een Europees samenwerkingsverband van toonaangevende adviesbureaus. Berenschot is lid van de Raad van Organisatie-Adviesbureaus (ROA) en volgt de gedragscode van deze brancheorganisatie.
